I see people comment all the time that the AF has less training slots. Technically, this is true, but not necessarily the whole truth.

The Army and the Navy Dental Corps have more authorizations than the AF.

We have less people, so we have less authorizations for training. When you apply to a specialty program in the AF, you are competing against less people. Percentage wise, all the services are virtually the same.

The AF has authorizations for just under 1000 dentists. The Army has authorizations for 1200+ and the Navy Dental Corps is also bigger than the AF.

Your numbers for the Army are not correct. Air Force and Army at this time have similar numbers.

Here are the numbers for the last 3 years for the Army (FY 07/08/09). Please post the Air Force and Navy and we can compare. I will list # applied/# slots available.

Comprehensive - 14/20; 14/20; 31/20
Perio 10/4; 8/4; 8/4
Endo 19/8; 16/8; 12/8
Prosth 4/4; 3/3; 4/4
Pediatric 6/2; 6/1; 10/2
Public Health N/A; 1/1; 0/0
Ortho 13/3; 12/3; 15/3
OMFS 19/9; 19/10; 18/10
Oral Path 1/1; 1/0; 0/0

(note many of the alternates in comprehensive this year were able to get in as they bumped accepted people up to the previous years open slots.

I do not have GPAs or board scores of those accepted - they don't put that info out.

Comprehensive Dentistry 15/10, 15/10, 16/10
Perio 6/4, 3/3, 2/2
Endo 10/4, 7/4, 5/4
Pros 2/2, 5/4, 2/2
Pediatrics 6/2, 7/3, 3/2
Ortho 11/5, 9/2, 7/3
OMS 12/5, 8/5, 11/8
Orofacial Pain 1/1, 2/1, 0/0
Radiology 2/1, 0/0, 0/0

My numbers may not have been exactly correct, but based on the PM you sent me, percentage wise we're pretty close. And, while we have less slots, we have less applicants for those slots because we have a smaller corps. We're pretty even in some areas and we "beat" each other in other areas. Looks like a wash.

I don't have any Navy numbers.

This thread was meant for information only. I'm not trying to thumb my nose at the Army or Navy (remember, I'm prior Army). It doesn't matter which service you train in, the training will be some of the best in the world.

Where do you guys get those statistics and where could one find them for the Navy?

AF releases their statistics each year and then posts them on an AF site.

Probably the best way to get Navy info would be to ask on the Navy thread

Navy does not post the information. When contacted they said the number of slots varies from year to year based upon number graduating, what the program directors want. They said if interested in a specific program to call them at (301) 295-0064 and they can get you in touch with the program you are interested in.
