Sorry to hear you're dealing with all of this. I think having a transparent conversation with your PI explaining your extenuating circumstances is the way to go. Try to emphasize how grateful you are for the opportunities given to you and don't burn bridges. People understand these kinds of things, and you're doing the right thing by prioritizing your own health. Lmk if you need any more specific advice, happy to chat via PM! You've got this :)

Agree with above, if you don't want to do research then don't do it. You can end this experience in a transparent and professional manner.
