I heared that applying for fellowships starts during PGY2 of IM residency, and that LOR I get from the PD of my program counts alot, what will be the situation if PGY2 is my 1st year at program X (I've transfered from PGY1 at program Y), can
I still get LOR strong enough to make me competitive for a good fellowship (e.g: Card or Hem/Onc) or it would be a better idea to wait till the next year (PGY3) to develop better contacts and get decent LOR & spend this extra year (after my residency & before starting the fellowship) doing research in the field I'm interested in? also what's the meaning of the "chief year" & how do they select the resideny who'll do a PGY4 as a chief in IM ?

thanks in advance for the input.
Best regards.
