I have a patient requiring AB prophylaxis (he has a penicillin allergy) for a dental procedure. He was just diagnosed with diverticulitis and has been placed on Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) for 7 days. When he asked the pharmacist about any interactions he was told to ask the dentist.

So does anyone know of any interactions between the two? And could the Bactrim preclude the use of the Clindamycin?

Just FYI what are some AB prophylaxis interactions you may have learned about?

I would question whether the Bactrim is already sufficient to be considered a pre-med in itself. Bactrim is a fairly broad spectrum antibiotic and may already provide coverage.

Med Consult.

A call to the patients physician will answer the question.

Our attendings would have us cross-cover with clinda.
