Can someone please quickly explain the steps it takes to become an orthopedic surgeon? Do you need to do a general surgery residency first, and then an orthopedic fellowship, or can you match directly into orthopedic surgery.
Also, Im volunteering at an orthopedic hospital in NYC. Most of the residents there do surgery, but one resident walked in the other day with a suit and tie (not scrubs or surgery gear like the others). It seemed like he was doing a post operative assessment (asking how the patients felt, checking if the patients had any sensation in their lower extremities, etc.) Do all orthopedic surgeons do this at some point in their residency?
Thanks.
