It cannot be overstated just how premature this post is. Do NOT get anxious, it is FAR too early to receive anything. Last year the earliest invitation wasn't until December 7th. I'm just an anxious kid and needed to be busy after submitting my stuff :)

I know! I know! I'm sorry! I told myself I was going to wait at least until I heard something, I just couldn't sit still!

This is a dumb question but do we have to wait until all the rec letters are in before submitting? I know last year we did, I wasn't sure about this year as some sites I've applied to say they can get it later from the site...

I sent my materials in before all the letters were in, largely because one of my letter writers got done way early and I didn't want them to receive his letter without hearing from me first. No problems so far. All my materials were emailed so I included a statement like "Along with my materials you will also receive three letters of recommendation via email from Drs. X Y and Z" One site responded a few days later with an email thanking me for the materials and saying she looked forward from hearing from my other two writers. So I wouldn't worry too much!

I wonder if this applies to appa-cas too...a couple of my writers have submitted letters, but I’m still waiting on a couple as well.

Me: It's way to early to hear anything. The earliest possible time to hear anything wouldn't be until the end of next week, and even that is doubtful.
Also me: I'll just check my email really quick<refreshrefreshrefresh>

I submitted my applications throughout this week. My biggest stressors were waiting for my letters of recommendations to come in and then ruminating over if I "picked" the right ones for each site. Good luck everyone.

Well this is interesting. I was just sent an email from a site asking me to complete an additional cover letter that covers some extra things. I hope they didn't hate my first one. You'd think that if they did, they wouldn't bother asking for more information, right?

it's weird. in in the internship waiting period i was very clearly very anxious. now, it's like, i don't know if i'm not as anxious or i've just suppressed the feelings, they're lingering there, in the back.
;)
anybody with me?

I can’t tell if I’m confident...burnt out...delusionally believing this process isn’t as bad as internship or what. But I definitely am way too relaxed about this lol.

I completely agree. I joke about being an anxious mess, but in all honesty I'm absolutely sure that this process is not only easier to do, but easier to do successfully. And a large part of that is that even if we don't get a placement as if February 25, there are a lot of other options. And like..... We're all going to be doctors at the end of our internship, placement immediately ready to go or not. We are going to be okay, unlike last year where it felt like everything could and would get flushed down the toilet on Match Day.

Given the role this movie played in our journey together last year, this is quite possibly the nicest thing anyone has ever said about me.

Honestly? Meh. Reminded me of sequels to disney classics. You watch because you love the characters, but there isn't much of a plot holding everything together.

Sorry...was there a plot the first movie? :D regardless, I will probably watch this too.

Hi All - this may be an obvious question - but when sites specify they want a letter from the "graduate program training director" does that refer to our program's director of clinical training? That's what I've been assuming but now I'm psyching myself out.

Remember that time you made a worst case scenario plan for not matching by planning on going to see the last Fifty Shades of Grey movie in theaters? And then said my favorite thing out of our like 600 page thread which was, and I quote, "I like to feel low all at once"?:rofl::rofl::rofl:

This made me think of that, that's all

I had a couple of deadlines on the 1st. They have already sent confirmation "we received your application and look forward to reviewing it" e-mails. Feels so strange this go round to be conversing with the actual people/sites and not that nameless faceless feeling of the AAPI.

Yes!

Question. How is everyone viewing postdoc in the grander sense? Is it a final year of specialization with a population you already have a lot of training and experience with? Or is it a year of specialization to try something potentially new and only somewhat related to your experience?

Can it be both? I've recently had warnings to not try working solely with a population I have only some experience with on postdoc. Thoughts?

I’m not applying to post doc this year but have a question - if you’re not sure if your dissertation will be defended in time to graduate, do you still apply to post docs?

Yes and no. You can apply, but it's only advised if you are absolutely sure you will defend and graduate by the time you start postdoc. Otherwise you could lose a postdoc if you get one. Sites legally can't allow you to provide services if you have not graduated.

I’m generally viewing it as a final year of specialization to really start to dive into the thing I’ve figured out through generalized training I want to do.

That being said, one of the places I’m applying has a large component of an entirely new population, so I think it could be both. Ultimately, what’s the harm in applying? If you get an offer they obviously think you’re qualified!

Many of my sites want a letter from the DCT of my grad program and/or my dissertation chair verifying that I will defend my dissertation before the start of post doc, so I’d say to be cautious if you’re not reasonably confident.

That's a good point. I just heard a horror story about people doing this and ending up on remedial plans during postdoc because the sites were expecting a certain level of autonomy the people could not achieve due to that lack of experience. Freaked me out.
