2018 Match List

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do you happen to know anything about the student that matched surgery at the Cleveland clinic? Research, etc.

Thank you.

That’s the Akron program. It’s not the same as Cleveland Clinic main, although they had someone match there last year. The OSU match is one of the most impressive DO GS matches I’ve ever seen, right up there with KCU UW.

So only 1 DO matched at Plainview's Ortho program? That program historically takes 4-5 students per year. So they gave away 3-4 seats to MDs this cycle?

They have 6 spots total. Almost positive they put 3 spots in the DO match and 3 spots in the MD match.

hmmm...according to the match lists posted so far only 1 student from Touro-Middleton seems to have matched there. I may be wrong though. Didn't do an in-depth search/analysis.

Yeah I don’t think all the match lists (maybe not even half) have been posted on here.

Official Touro NY list: Match Results

Anyone know what program the "Internal Med - New York Presbyterian" is?

I think NY Presbytarian is associated with Cornell and Columbia med.

Yeah I was wondering which one, or if it was one of the NYP affiliates in Queens or Brooklyn (though it says New York, NY which is Manhattan). If it's Columbia or Cornell then that's a pretty sweet match.

That’s an oddly-prepared list. I think some of the prelim matches are actually categorical for things like neuro/psych/pmr/etc.

Also, I highly, highly doubt that we matched anyone for IM at NY Presbyterian.

That being said, that Cornell Psych match is awesome - especially because up until very recently, Cornell explicitly stated that DOs are not considered for their psychiatry program.

The flagship NYP programs are never going to touch DOs, barring ridiculous connections. It's probably the affiliates.

Yeah I'm doubtful that its one of those, that's why I asked, but there are also NYP Brooklyn and Queens matches on that list so who knows. The UTSW match is equally impressive though. It's ranked about the same as Columbia for IM.

This.

A family friend who works with some of the fellowship programs there once told me that DO has a better chance of matching neurosurgery at Harvard than IM at NYP.

Do they still get the same training? I mean if you don’t match at the main hospital does that still allow you to,receive great clinical experience?

Pretty much any training program will give you competent surgical training if that’s what you mean. I’m a little confused as to what info you are specifically looking for?

The two programs are mostly separate.

Thank you, most people tend to make a big distinction between band name programs and no name programs. I wanted to know if there is a huge difference in training. For instance if I go to,mayo for gen surg will I get the same surgical training at a community program. Or are the brand name programs better in training also.

Often it depends completely on your goals as each program will be slightly different and will have a different focus. Mayo is a bad example because it has a reputation of somewhere you don’t want to go for surgical training. Brand name doesn’t always mean “great training.”

Official match list from the mothership is still MIA, but I can confirm that there is a UPenn ENT match on our unofficial student-generated google doc list. Mad props to that individual.

did it say Upenn or UPMC?

did it say Upenn or UPMC?

It was UPenn. Per what the person who matched said:
-Good board scores
-Multiple pubs
-Worked hard on aways at 6 ACGME ENT residencies and got LORs from PDs/chairs at those places who are well known in the field (this is likely the key - says multiple people commented on the LORs)
-And a personal one from home

Sounds like they did awesome on aways.

Amazing. So happy for them, huge accomplishment. Hopefully they can come on and share some gems, or pass it on to fellow students to share.
6 aways...not sure how that was done but props for them for making it happen schedule wise. Can also attest that LOR's from big wigs are a big deal. No one had anything to say about my LOR except when they came across the big wigs. Nearly everyone commented on it.

I don’t know this person to get more details (like how good is “good”) but what Hallowman said is what’s in the notes/advice section of our google doc. I think the morale of the story, anecdotal as it may be, is that being an academic rockstar and doing research is obviously key but the adage that “aways don’t matter in the ACGME world” is wrong— they clearly helped this person get valuable visibility, connections and LORs.

Out of 142 total graduates on the commencement booklet, 7 did not have residency listed next to their name and I don't know why since the school official says 3 people(not 7) did not match this year.
Total of 16 students(11.3%) matched to TRI-only this year, which seems like quite a bit.

How did PNWU do on their 2018 match? What's your take?

everyone wants to look fancy ha. I dont think the program will survive the accreditation process. I thought about ENT for a hot minute and contact a majority of them . This was one that had alot of citations. ENT in general is super hard to get approved

Prelim-surgery intern year followed by a radiology pgy-2 spot. Most (all?) radiology programs require you to do an intern year first.

If its the school I’m thinking of, then they are indeed taking shelfs and having to perform on rotations just like anyone else. They just can’t “honor” or “high pass” a rotation. The complaint I’ve read about on here is that a transcript full of “P” on every rotation hurts them because PDs assume they couldn’t attain honors when in fact no one could.

Or perhaps we’re talking about completely different schools.

Yes, I think that's a problem that could be holding that place back. Nothing against the students and this is out of their control, but its ridiculous to not have actual merit grades where it matters the most (M3). This is a tier 1 factor for residency selection in addition to USMLE exams for the ACGME world which you all are soon going to be living.

------
Couple other things.

Read some of my posts that may have only been 1-2 months ago and cringed. I was being unprofessional/jerky...deleted 1-2 of them, a few others while strongly stated, had elements of truth.

I looked for good matches in my field (IM) as an MD and these were some DO schools I thought had solid IM match lists (in no particular order inside the categories). Keep in mind this is in context for DO schools. Take the lowest matching US-MD school and compare it to TCOM/PCOM and it's probably still better:

Excellent:
PCOM (UPMC-women’s track, BU, Temple, UMaryland//UMass, UConn, Drexel solid mix of upper and lower mid tiers...that Einstein is not Montefiore, but a community program named Einstein in Philly)
CCOM-suppose regional bias helps with those Chicago schools too.
OUCOM- Cleveland Clinic, Case Western, Cincinnatix2, extremely solid. I’d say it’s the top if these weren’t all in OH.
RVUCOM (didn't expect this to be higher, they should change their name to Western COM)

****pending**(some confusion with TCOM v TTUCOM, probably combined them)
TCOM (UTSW!!!!, Cleveland Clinic, Real Einstein, UIC, UTMB, outstanding!)...my apologies, completely missed that for the incorrect placement, TCOM.

Great:

NOVA-surprisingly good - nothing against the person who threw some shade at UF-Gainsville earlier but that is the Florida IM program, is legit, and deserves to be celebrated as a decent match).
KCU (Case, VCU, MCWx2, UTMB, OSU-Case/OSU/VCU are some v good matches, quite decent).

Good:
MSUCOM (CCF is solid, as is HFHx4, but there's literally nothing else and while HFH main is not affiliated with MSUCOM, it's right next door...perhaps EM sapped from IM, I know from personal experience they have lots of good students).
NYITCOM: (Monte, GWU, UMass, Stony Brook, Rutgers (RWJ and NJMS)

Other notes for IM:
-Just because a program has more DOs doesn't make it weaker. There are tons of midtier programs in states like OH, Il, Michigan, etc. that are significantly stronger than say Rutgers for example.
-There are a million Einstein's. The one to target is called Montefiore-Moses&Weiler
-Baylor University (community) =/= Baylor College of Medicine (the top one)
-CCF is an anomaly overall. Not deff not top 20, but solid and on the lower end of the 20-40 bracket as a solid midtier with great fellowship prospects.
-Non-official Mayos are not great.
-Pennsylvania Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Health System =/= UPenn, think that got misinterpreted for a different specialty somewhere.
-Some good places you should aim for as DOs outside all midtier midwestern (MN-OH) university programs are UCSD, Utah, Colorado, UTSW, VCU, Georgetown, GWU, UF-Gainsville, and any others here that you like).

Sounds like they did awesome on aways.
Very impressive! I was really surprised because I didn't meet this person on the trail but it makes sense if they only did ACGME auditions. This guy/gal had guts to skip out on the AOA programs.

OHCOM

Add UPMC (the main one) to PCOM. It's under Internal Medicine/Women's Health: Match List | Student Affairs at PCOM

TCOM (UTSW!!!!, Cleveland Clinic, Real Einstein, UIC, UTMB, outstanding!)...my apologies, completely missed that for the incorrect placement, TCOM.

I'm assuming you mean TouroCOM, not TCOM (Texas College of Osteo Med)? Or am I being a crazy person?

Ugh must have made a mistake. It would definitely more make more sense for UTSW to come from a Texas school. Will edit soon. Part of the reason that impressed me was that it was an out of region match.

It’s not UPMC main. Montefiore is the main hospital designation for Einstein.

It says UPMC Montefiore/Presbyterian ... it’s the main one. You can check on the UPMC website and only the main one offers these specialty tracks

I’m sorry. You’re absolutely right. UPMC

Sorry, I meant that the UTSW match, plus those other one; Monte, UTMB, UIC, etc are definitely from TouroCOM NY (so it was an out of state match). TCOM is the abbreviation for Texas COM so I was confused when you had put that down.
