2015-2016 Official Interview Invites Thread

Is there any way to tell where you are in the queue on an Interview Broker waitlist? I can only figure out how many people total have wait listed for that day, but not which order I am (may be #1, may be at the end). Sorry if this is obvious and I am missing something.

Dude...enough. If you fail the boards, that's on you, not your program. Just because it's an easy thing to measure doesn't mean it's a valuable metric to use to judge programs.

Board pass rate is the Press-Ganey score of residencies. Easily measured, statistically irrelevant.

You ignored the last sentence of my post, which is the most important. The statistical validity of the board pass rate of any one program is probably something like p=0.5 (number pulled straight out of my butt, but likely not that far off).

Programs are small and people are going to fail every year. A program with 10 residents will statistically have 0-1 fail every year...if 0 fail 1 year and 2 fail the next, their stats are nuked. Also, look at the CIs on that PDF. They range from 10-30 which is kind of ridiculous.

You also need to understand how this gets measured. If you didn't take the test the year (or year after) you finished, you're considered to have failed it. I took it 2 years after I finished, so my program would have taken a hit for that as I would have been considered a failure (despite a comfortable passing score).

Quick question on the Brigham interview: is everyone going to the optional career mentoring forum? I notice if I do this, the day will end at 4 but I have to be ready for an interview dinner in the area at 6:30 so would rather use that time to change/wind-down for the next one.

Also, in general, what are your thoughts on doing two interviews back-to-back for programs that, barring any substantial negatives on interview day, will likely be at the top of your rank list?

I've been checking every so often to see if any alternate dates free up, but no changes yet, still completely full . I'm surprised they don't have many total interview dates and haven't budged. Hopefully later as people tire out!

yes, it would help you at that same university. your attending can write an email to the PD. if this is for other universities, i disagree with the above commenter--it's worth a try. the PD at my medical school said that letters are usually read at the time of interview and reconsulted when making the rank list. too much reading to occur during the screening process. it probably works differently everywhere. nothing to lose!

I received that message as well and quite confused too. Sounds like an "alternate list" rather than waitlist

Hmmm... Just went back to my interview broker and still see the dates open that I mentioned earlier. Perhaps someone else who has access via IB to the Colorado schedule can confirm if I'm right or whether I'm hallucinating (it IS Colorado after all....)

BU has only Jan 11 open on interview broker (previously didn't even have any open), not sure if they're sending invites still.. but i feel a lot of people have been switching or dropping dates cuz I put myself on the wait list and now i'm interviewing

So I'm currently doing my Sub-I at a decently large university program. Would it help at this point if I get a LOR from my attending or do I need to get a letter from the PD? Or will none of that help me at this point?

Get them to directly contact some programs on your behalf. I'm not sure if that'll may a difference, but certainly better then uploading a letter.

For the people who haven't heard back from programs yet, it is likely because you have been placed on that programs interview waitlist. Most programs will do this without notifying you of such. A few programs take the time to officially tell you that you are on the waitlist, but those are exceptions and not the standard.

Programs know that as time goes on that people who have interviews at their institution will cancel and have a waitlist that they will then pull from to send interview invites to. As you can imagine there is a lot of movement on the waitlists for the lower tier and middle tier programs and less movement as you go up to top tier programs. It is not unheard for interview invites to continue to slowly trickle in into November, December, and even as late as early January. If you haven't gotten an official rejection from a program that is a good thing.

For those who are asking people to check interview broker for open spots. That's not the way it works. The programs don't get a cancellation and then immediately go to their waitlist to fill it in. They do it in batches. Once a week or once every two weeks, as cancellations accumulate the programs will go back in and review. They will then send a batch of invites out off their waitlist.

For the people who haven't heard back from programs yet, it is likely because you have been placed on that programs interview waitlist. Most programs will do this without notifying you of such. A few programs take the time to officially tell you that you are on the waitlist, but those are exceptions and not the standard.

Programs know that as time goes on that people who have interviews at their institution will cancel and have a waitlist that they will then pull from to send interview invites to. As you can imagine there is a lot of movement on the waitlists for the lower tier and middle tier programs and less movement as you go up to top tier programs. It is not unheard for interview invites to continue to slowly trickle in into November, December, and even as late as early January. If you haven't gotten an official rejection from a program that is a good thing.

For those who are asking people to check interview broker for open spots. That's not the way it works. The programs don't get a cancellation and then immediately go to their waitlist to fill it in. They do it in batches. Once a week or once every two weeks, as cancellations accumulate the programs will go back in and review. They will then send a batch of invites out off their waitlist.

Thanks a lot for the info! I thought many programs silently reject and you never get a notice at all too. There was a program I recently emailed who only informed me that I was no longer being considered after recieving my email. It makes it very difficult to tell who is still giving you a shot and who is not. Emory is another that I'm not too sure about but they haven't gotten back to me yet.
