I've noticed that too. But I've also noticed a handful of programs seem to be 2-3 weeks later than when they sent out last year. All in all it seems that the number of programs inviting is about even for this time last year.

By my count, 45 programs have sent out invites. More than 60 have not. Hope springs eternal.

Plenty of programs left. Also according to a paper published by Yousuf in 2012, ranking 8 programs gives you a 90% chance to match.

HAHA. This is me exactly. I have 9 interviews and was feeling great, but I've heard nothing for the past 10 days. Now, the irrational fear is starting to kick in.

hahaha aw, i'm glad to hear from you guys in the same boat. that makes me feel a lot better. you know, it's so stupid, but every time i go through something like this (MCATs, med school apps, step 1s, residency apps) i get completely irrational and freak out over stupid stuff. i mean, i even know that when all's said and done i'll most likely look back and wonder why i was so neurotic... but when it's looming in front of you, it's so hard not to feel like all your hopes and dreams are hanging by a thread.

it's even worse cuz i just finished my last away rotation and i'm basically just cooling my heels in a really light elective, so i have all the time in the world to stalk my inbox and/or this thread and freak out. LOL.
 
one of my friends is applying for ophtho this year and he only has 1 interview. Should he be worried now and start making backup plans?
 
Would any of the people with 6-7+ interviews at this point mind sharing a little bit about yourselves? Like, are you all just stellar candidates with tons of pubs or is this the norm for the average applicant by now? I keep seeing programs that I had considered more towards the "safety" end of the spectrum passing me and some other applicants I know up for interviews. Just hoping to get an idea before I slip further into this fun anxiety spiral.
 
I have a good number of interviews. I applied to a very large number of programs. Not all of them, but quite a few. I had no idea what to expect and so figured I'd rather spend the extra money than potentially regret not having done so. I have some research experience in other fields, none in ophthalmology. I did two away rotations (got an interview invite to one of them). Step 1 score 260+, top 3rd of medical school, no AOA, honors in medicine and all the rest high pass for core rotations. I have some unique background/extracurricular activities that I think make for good conversation during an interview, but I honestly don't think that they would do much to increase my chance of actually getting an interview.

So honestly at this point I think that the only reason I have the number of interviews that I have is because of how many I applied to. I think that having a good Step 1 score of course keeps doors open, but I don't know if that would be a reason to interview me on its own. But who knows? Maybe it's because the piece of paper with my name on the dart board is bigger, so I have a more likely chance of the dart hitting my name and getting an invite.

I'm posting this from a dummy account I set up as I typically don't like posting info like this, but hopefully this will make you feel better. As someone who can be absurdly neurotic at times I know how you feel.

I have received 7 invites so far, including UCSF and Wilmer (both of which I am very excited about). Here are my stats:

-263 Step 1
-1 1st author pub in ophtho
-1 poster at ARVO
-2 podium presentations (AAO and AMIA)
-Junior AOA
-Honors in all clerkships except OB/GYN (Near Honors)
-I also hope to have another 1st author pub submitted by the time of my first interview and I've gotten a couple of 3rd author pubs submitted as well (not sure if these are all that helpful)

I hate sounding like an a$$h*le, but I do think I'm probably an above average applicant and that's why I've been lucky enough to have a fair number of invites at this point. I would try your best not to freakout as more than half of the programs out there have yet to even send out their first wave of invites and many other programs have yet to send out their second wave. Obviously, this is my first time through the process as well, but it seems to be that we are still in the 1st half of the invite phase.

Would you mind giving a number to what you mean by a very large number of programs you applied to? I thought i applied to a good amount and don't have a good number of interviews at this point...
 
@embarrassedapp - you sound amazing...no wonder I haven't gotten that many invites...if you're considered "average"

I think that having a good Step 1 score of course keeps doors open, but I don't know if that would be a reason to interview me on its own.

Pretty much this stuff is huge and has a lot to do with the number of interviews you have right now.

The average applicant with the average numbers may have less than 5 interviews right now. Even if they applied to 80+ programs. If you have a research year and an average step, you're an above average applicant. If you're 10-20 pts above the mean step 1 you're above average.

Many unique extracurriculars and life experiences

I applied to 90 programs and have 15+ interviews at this point. Very grateful and humble.

Letter writers not the biggest names, but people that know me EXTREMELY well

I applied to 40 programs and have 7 interviews at this point.

god, i'm just gonna stop looking at this thread. every time a new school pops on and i don't get an email i freak out all over again, esp if that school only sent one wave of invites last year :\

I think we all feel like that. My husband just read my email (before I did) and exclaimed, "you got another invitation!" It was, in fact, a rejection letter. Sigh. Maybe tomorrow ;)
