If programs have communicated their rejections to applicants (big assumption), then the data is great news for the group currently listed as Alternates and those "being considered" (no action, other school category, & hold), which consists of 638 applicants for ~490 expected acceptances! In the past, the programs have needed to accept about ~750 applicants to get about 630 students to matriculate. Historically, there are 100-120 withdrawals after acceptances, mostly rolling into MD matriculations, and about 20+ students defer for a future year (but also 20+ matriculate after deferring from a prior cycle). Having said that, every year, late in the cycle (~April-May) at least 20 applicants are taken out of the rejection group and offered acceptances.

Bottom line, check your applications on each of the school websites, if you are scheduled for interviews or have interviewed in several programs and you are still in the running, enjoy the Holiday season and New Year... your odds to join the class enrolling in 2015 have improved!

Nope, I just got a waitlist notification from them :/ I also got rejected from Cornell, NYU, and Duke, but I did get an interview at Columbia. I have a few MD interviews, but everything else has no action at this point.
 
What does alternate list mean please? Been put on one - does it mean I have any chance of getting in? Should I be giving up hope?
 
It depends on the program where you got that offer... Email the program director, provide an update, indicate your interest (if genuine), and ask that you want to talk over the phone, if possible. As you saw in my prior post, there is a good chance that the program who gave you an alternate offer or other program that interviewed you might eventually extend an acceptance. Not much activity over the Holidays...

Thanks for your response Sir! I guess I will have to wait but I shall follow your advise. Would you recommend sending additional letters of recommendations? I am really interested in the program which put me on alternate list but don't want to sound pushy.. Would it really be okay to call?

Any updates on 2015 MD/PhD Cycle as to what the current stats maybe? Still waiting to get off alternate lists. Wrote to PD as per Fencer's advise but have not yet heard back :( Praying hard - hopefully I shall hear from someone. Loved the programs and the schools. What updates could I send to the schools I have been wait listed to make my application stronger? Any idea how this alternate list works and any further advise? Thanks in advance to everyone. Don't know if I should be writing in this forum or elsewhere..

As you can tell, about half of the MD/PhD positions haven't been offered as of yet. There are several sets of interviews still scheduled for late January and February. Programs must offer at least the same number of spots as they plan to matriculate by March 15th. Applicants must then reduce their multiple acceptances to a single one by April 30th.

Thank you so much! That helps :) waiting anxiously till then and hoping to hear back from the PDs. Do they encourage any updates or perhaps they are busy and therefore cannot respond back...
 
theoretically, virtually everyone who is being considered right now is going to be accepted somewhere?

Edit : Wait, 2015 doesn't add up???

As of yesterday, there were a little over 330 accepted applicants to MD/PhD programs (many with multiple acceptances). As in prior years, about 760 individuals out of the almost 1900 applicants receive acceptances, indicating that at least 44% of the individuals with eventual acceptance offers for 2014 have been chosen (and reported). However, the national class of MD/PhD students enrolling in 2014 will probably be between 615 and 640 because of deferrals or withdrawals (prior to matriculation) from MD/PhD programs, perhaps to pursue MD training. Some of those late withdrawals have a domino effect allowing MD/PhD acceptances as late as early June.

The 2013 AAMC stats were just released at 609 first-year MD/PhD students but they were reported inaccurately in several categories for several institutions. For example, no first-year MD/PhD students were reported from Baylor MSTP in the AAMC table 33 but BCM's website indicates 9 first-year students. My program numbers were also reported wrongly. One potential problem with the data from Texas Schools is that the MD/PhD programs are in AMCAS and they merge the database with TMDSAS data to incorporate all of the MD acceptances for all Texas programs except BCM, who doesn't participate in TMDSAS.​

The 2014 MD/PhD class eventually matriculated 626 students. As you can tell (371+16+373=760), I expect that few (~15) applicants who have been rejected will have a reversal of fortune. Some programs will never do that, others might just have to do it. If you interviewed and have not received rejections for all of your program applications, your chances are still pretty good for an eventual MD/PhD acceptance.

@Fencer , thanks again for keeping us informed. Your posts have been super helpful, especially during the long months of silence.

I had a question about the data -- what is an "Alternate list"? Also, is it possible for there to be an overlap between the "Alternate list" group or "Being Considered" group and the "Accepted" group -- or do the numbers in the first two groups reflect only students who have not been accepted anywhere?
 
The system categorizes you based upon the best response that you have received (> = better than): acceptance>alternate>no response>rejection. If you have an acceptance, you do not appear in the other groups. This is your best overall success in the MD/PhD cycle. Most of the people who currently have acceptances will receive multiple acceptances, see above in this very thread for examples. They tend to be the more rounded/competitive applicants and there are many schools who have not made their selections. However, there are extraordinarily talented people who only get a single acceptance and, some times, late in the process. Keep in mind the MD/PhD deadlines as per traffic rules, as they tend to be the dates (+/- 1-2 weeks) with most activity: March 15, all programs have to extend offers at least equal to (or higher) to number of expected matriculants. April 30, all applicants must limit acceptances to a single program to risk losing all acceptances.

Alternate is an applicant on at least one MD/PhD wait-list.
