What's up everybody? Anyone else submit today? I did - without any LORs, but excited to get the process going. Lets get a conversation going - talk about apps, programs you like, money drain, anything.

Who's with me??

Submitted today as well. Still awaiting 1 LOR for rads and the IM Chariman's letter for prelim year. Also awaiting transcript which our school will upload mid-september.

Programs I like: the one that will take me :p

Money Drain: yep!

Where are the good programs in the South? By the South, I mean all the way from Texas to Florida.

And also, how easy would it be for someone to get there from the Midwest?

What's up, guys. Just wanted to wish everyone good luck! I submitted last Tuesday, now just playing the waiting game. I'm couples matching, which has already proven a bit stressful trying to coordinate categorical/advanced/and prelim programs, but hopefully things will work out.

Best of luck!

Anyone heard anything yet? I submitted on 9/1, shortly after 6am. :p

Same here. 3 prelims and 1 transitional but no radiology interviews yet. Starting to get antsy...my husband is wracking (sp?) up the anesthesiology interviews and meanwhile I have none

Is this a bad omen of the increased competition in radiology this year? I got a handful of interview offers by now this time last year. My first one was 2 days after submitting.

Several places have sent out interview offers already. There's a list in AM.

Yep. Though according to last year's interview thread most programs didn't offer until Oct/Nov, so I'm hoping the invites going out now are just the tip of the iceberg.

Maybe I'm brain dead from cramming for Step 2, but what does "AM" refer to? I'd love to know which programs have sent out interview offers already.

Edit: Just figured it out - Aunt Minnie

Yeah don't worry, most of these places will send other rounds of invites.

Aunt Minnie. It's kind of like SDN but just for radiology. If you want to minimize your personal neuroticism, I would recommend not going to it...but it is helpful, even if it has made me more neurotic.

Here's the interview thread: http://www.auntminnie.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=214957&mpage=2

If you can't see it, go to auntminnie.com, sign up, then go to forums --> medical students. There is a rads interview thread and a prelim/TY interview thread as well, among many others.

uhh, a stud senior of the class before me matching at MGH said he started getting interviews in october. nothing in september.

I haven't heard back anything. weird.

Only had 2 prelim offers and 1 cryptic email from Baylor Dallas prelim about contacting them if I don't get a rads interview b/c rads is categorical (very confusing, as I am still interested in their prelim year apart from if I match rads there). No rads yet. It's still early though, so don't listen to Taurus spreading fear lol. Only about 10 places offered interviews according to AM, and I guarentee you those are all only for top first wave applicants. According to last years interview thread most invites started rolling seriously after Oct started. I have a number of friends applying as I am sure you all do and the 2 I keep up with have only 1 invite each so far (we go to top 20 school, they are AOA and >255 step) so I wouldn't be freaking out or anything, they will come. Surpisingly even though there is a pressure to turn in your rads app early, other specialties have been offering a ton of interviews already, with friends having 5-10 in some fields.

I know, the impression I got from people on AM was to turn in your app ASAP or else it could really hurt you. It's not bad advice in general, but it seems for radiology it doesn't matter nearly as much as for other specialties.

Last year I got an interview at just about every program I applied to that I submitted early (on September 1st). I decided to apply to several more programs in early October and didn't get an interview from a single one of those! Just anecdotal, but from my experience it is absolutely key in Radiology to get your app in early. Also my advisor at Northwestern who is the director of the residency program there said as much.

When did your school submit your transcripts? I was one of those people who submitted September 1st, but as my school submits our transcripts October 1st I don't think I will be seeing any interviews until after that date.

I'm a DO student, i've received 2 transitionals, 1 prelim, and 1 rads interview so far. i submitted on midnight september 2nd (just 16 hours after it opened up). i'm by no means a stellar candidate (esp since i'm a DO), so who knows-i hope they keep comin...would love to have around 15, but that might be wishful thinking in my case...

FYI, here's the latest from Aunt Minnie....

Relax dude, it's still early. 7 TY already? That's pretty sick. How many did you apply to?

yeah i know im prob stressing out over nothing..but i dont have much research exp and im not from a big name med school..applied to a lot of TYs (15)

I think if you have ANY Rads interviews at this point you're in pretty good shape, and competitive.

As for me - still a handful of prelim and 1 TY. Waiting on the first cherry-popper :)

Damn I wish I had freakin 7 TY lol. I have 2 prelim IM (1 is home school) and 1 rads that came on friday at 5:30pm from Dartmouth (woo hoo way to start the weekend!).

Congrats AlexanderPink, that's awesome! Sorry about my previous post, i think i looked at the rad interview list on auntminnie and thought that everyone had a bunch of interviews already at this pt. Good luck this wk guys!

oh man, I applied to 40 and I'm currently sitting on only 1 interview! Submitted mid Sept though for TYs

Submitted Rads on 9/1 and currently 1 interview

how many TY interviews would you guys say is a good number to go to? 10?

i think if u have any interviews at this point-you're probably a strong applicant. what do you guys think? i think more 3 or more ints right now-you're probably a stellar applicant.

I think so too.

Not to point fingers or start a flame war, but most of the early interviews are to their own medical students, stellar rotating students or community programs to "matchable" interviewees. Folks might not want to post this, but its generally true.

I've asked around and the residents at my current rotation institution say that most of the 260 + AOA folks heard back in november (yes, not even october).

That being said, I think 2+ rad interviews at this point would be reassuring.

Anyone know anything about the interview selection process at Harbor-UCLA TY program? I received my first invitation of the cycle from them this morning; it looks, however, like they not only invited me but the entire applicant pool. Just curious whether there's any screening. Thanks!

many of the programs that begin offering invites after nov 1st are the research oriented large academic programs...but there are many solid programs that have already sent out invites (mich, wake, mayo, pitt, ccf, uva..)

Sure. between my last post and today I'm 4/6 on that list of yours. Anyways, midwest offers early that much is obvious...still waiting on MGH, hopkins, MIR and they'll let the flood gates open in november. Ofcourse i'm a fellow applicant what the heck do i know.

Dear Prelim Programs,

Stop. I'm done now!

Dear Rads Programs,

Start! Seriously.
It's still early, Pontifex...not yet time to start worrying. But if you are starting to worry, just send an email to programs you're interested in and see if you get some love that way. Good luck! You'll be fine!

First... I'm so glad I'm not in your positions now. I can remember all too vividly the living ball of stress I was from July until Match Day.

Second... Don't sweat it. The interviews will come.

Third... if you're an applicant, I wouldn't go to AM until after you match. If you can't handle that advice, make sure you're on a PPI, H2 blocker, and maybe some pepto bismol as well. ;)

To write a letter of interest:

Dear program coordinator/PD

I'm writing to inform you of my interest in Program X. After researching and talking to tons of people I believe it will provide me with an excellent education.
I especially like A, B, and C things that the program does. I also like that the program offers a fellowship in the virtual colonoscopy. Additionally the location is ideal as it allows me to be closer to family, find true love, be a baller.
I believe I can offer alot to the program and would thrive in such an environment. Thank you for taking the time to peruse this and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thank you,
The best applicant you could ever hope to get

---I've sent out a few letters & actually got an interview at one the next day. Worth a shot if you really have an interest in the program

i think the best that those letters can do is have them look at your application again. upon a second review, maybe the PD will be like "oh i didn't see this about this guy, and he seems interested too, let's interview him"

most of the time, however, i think that these emails are pawned off onto the backburner. but maybe 1/10 may give you that one interview that you may not have otherwise received!
