So recently, I've heard some constructive criticism regarding optometry. Jason K outlined many valid reasons for the aspiring OD to carefully consider the profession of optometry before taking on expensive loans.
What Jason K was talking about in a nut-shell is this:
Are you joining the profession of optometry to make a difference (really helping people with their vision)?
If yes, how would you feel working in a place like Walmart which is more business oriented (and probably very little with real optometry care)?
Knowing this is not a get rich quick profession, at least, not anymore, would you look forward to work almost everyday?
Would you still feel you are making a difference?
FYI
I am still weighing my options to study optometry or medicine outright.
My motivation for considering the two:
Whether I'm studying for the MCAT or the OAT, I still have to review physics.
Both are 4 yrs of education (with medicine an extra 3 or 4 years paid residency; at least these intern years are paid (~55K).
I have an interest in ophthalmology, so either choice would suit me well.
I feel I would be more of a professional in either field.
What is your motivation for choosing optometry given what you know?
