Hey guys,

This question is straight out of Top Score's Math Section.
I understand how they got everything except for the (sec 45) part...

Question:
(sin 30)(sec 45)/(tan 0)+(csc 30) = ?

Answer:
sqrt2/4

Explanation:

sin 30 = 1/2
sec 45 = 1/cos 45 = sqrt2
tan 0 = 0
csc 30 = 1/sin 30 = 2
plugging it in and simplify, yields sqrt2/4

I get the same values for all the terms except for sec45.
I get sec45 = 2/sqrt2
because since cos=adjacent/hypot, sec=hypot/adjacent
and the coordinates for 45 degrees is (sqrt2/2 , sqrt2/2)
and since sec=hypot/adjacent
sec45 should equal, 2/sqrt2
hence I get the answer, 1/2sqrt2

I applied the same logic for all the other terms, and it all worked out fine....
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Sorry if the explanation is confusing....there was a lot I needed to say

(sqrt2)^2 = 2 ------ A
thus if u write it down as:
sqrt 2 x sqrt 2 / sqrt 2
(which is the same as 2/sqrt 2 using A)
the sqrt 2's cancel out and you're left with sqrt 2

I hope this helps..

oh my gracious
Thank you so much!
It took me a little bit to understand what you meant, but it makes complete sense!
Thank you!

:) I'm glad to hear that!!
Good luck with your DATs!!

PS: when are u planning on taking them?

july 16th --- the more I keep saying the date...the more it hits me that it's coming up real soon haha

have you taken them already?

nah...i plan on takin them on the 15th of aug...
Good luck!!!

I understand all of this except one thing strikes me as odd, though you may of just not written it. In order for (sin 30)(sec 45)/(tan 0)+(csc 30) = ? to work out as it does, (tan 0)+(csc 30) would have to be written as follows: [(tan 0)+(csc 30)], because otherwise the order of operations would require you to multiply (sin 30) with (sec 45) and then divide all of that by (tan 0), and lastly add (csc 30). This would give you an answer of infinity+2, which is infinity.

Did you forget the parentheses, or am I missing something?
