After completing my rotation in surgery, I've really thought about going into CT surgery and applying to do an integrated residency. I've done some research before, and was wondering if taking a year off to do research would help me match into one of these programs. Can anyone comment on how competitive they are, or whether research related to CT surgery would improve my chances of matching (in addition to board scores, honors, and LORs)?

1 year off + CT is 7 years, as is GS + 2 yrs CT, so I ask, why not just go the regular route? There were what, 19 spots to 42 applicants last year, so even if you took a year off, you aren't guaranteed a spot. I'm interested in CT but would just rather go the traditional route, although I hear that some of the integrated guys get to rotate through some cards stuff.
