Year off during residency

Does anyone know if it is possible to take a year off during residency? And how to go about doing this. I am about to start PGY 1 year (in FM) and would like to take a year off after intern year to work in Europe. (Am fully qualified to work there and have been guaranteed more than one job)

I have personal reasons for doing this and am in no rush to complete residency.

Ask your program director. There may be a policy for leave of absence that will allow you to return to the program in 1 year at the same level you left off at (i.e. up coming PGY2). I haven't heard of anyone taking that much time off but I guess it has been done.
