Saw this today in the Washington Post. Interesting. I'm a FM attending now, but I wish my school had more info about podiatry when I was there. I probably would have gone that route if I had to do it over again, just because as I understand it would guarantee me surgery, which I really wanted to match into (in the day, as they say )

That is a cool article... we do see nail avulsions, fractures, and biomech problems from sandals all the time. Those ballet type shoes that are trendy with women or the indoor soccer type shoes for either sex (think Puma or Adidas Samba) are also real bad for plantar fasciitis, heel spur syndrome, and other stuff.

I went to grad school in Miami, where flip flops are a way of life (for either gender, esp women). If they're a necessity, there's a few brands that at least have some arch support (but still no real protection from trips, rocks, etc):

We used podiatry-arena.com for our earlier recommendations, and will definitely go there again, but just wanted to see if the SDN crowd had anything useful to add.

Those two I linked are probably your best bet for flip flops...

I wear Teva sandals sometimes for camping, rafting, etc. They have a bit of arch support, good traction (even decent in water/rain), and the strong straps to let you run a bit without falling off. There's always the foot protection issue, but there's no getting around that with sandals. GL and have a fun summer
