Hi!

I am new in this thread. I study medicine at the university of Oslo, Norway. I want to come to canada after finishing my studies to become a ophthalmologist / work as a opthalmologist. But I want to know whether the working hours for ophthalmologist-residents and specialists in ophthalmology (of course for those specialists who work in hospitals). Can anybody help me? Is it a 8-to-4 job or do they work longer? Can I decide only to work eight hours a day as a resident in ophtalmology (for becoming an ophthalmolog) and as a specialist in ophthalmology (working in hospitals)?

Hi!

As a resident, no. You will have call and be busy.

As a staff physician, yes.

Hi again!

Thanks for the rapid reply!

I wonder if somebody here know exactly what the usual working hours for ophthalmologists (specialists) are? Are they from 8 to 16, or from 8 to 17?

And another question: Is it easy to get a job as an ophthalmologist in Toronto? Are there many hospitals there?

Thanks for the help! :)

Before jumping ahead, if you haven't done this already, I'd contact the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada to find the licensing requirements and certification process in order to practice in Canada. The standard hours for an ophto vary significantly - my ophthalmologist practices in Toronto and works 60-70hrs/wk from what he tells me. Keep in mind, this is definitely above the norm as he loves his job. The market for ophthalmologists in Toronto city proper maybe saturated, but there are still plenty of opportunities just outside the Toronto city area (i.e. 'sauga, Hamilton, etc).
