Your medical school interview serves two purposes: convince the interviewer that you are indeed the amazing person your application makes you out to be and assure them that your accomplishments have not come at the expense of acquiring decent social skills.

Medical, dental and veterinary schools have learned quickly that many applicants have help from parents, premed advisers and friends when it comes to writing personal statements and secondary essays. They also know that some applicants unwisely pad their application with extracurricular activities that the applicant was not truly invested in. Therefore while that great AMCAS application will get your foot in the door the interview is required to seal the deal. It assures schools that you actually do know the details of your scientific research and really did go on that two month humanitarian aid trip. You must know your application materials backwards and forwards to be able to have a meaningful conversation and assure the interviewer that you really did write and experience this material.

Medical schools are also becoming increasingly wary of applicants that have focused so much time on grades and activities they hope will get them into medical school that they have neglected to learn how to be decent human beings. This translates into a terrible bedside manner, inability to pass USMLE Step 2 Clinical Skills, higher malpractice rates later in life and generally embarrassing the medical school with lack of professionalism. The interview allows medical schools to ensure that you are a mature individual that will represent them well.

For these reasons practicing for you medical school interview is essential! Our Mock-Interview services have become one of our hottest sellers. All applicants that interview with us receive a copy of our interview preparation guide listing the most commonly asked interview questions. SDN Members who post a meaningful comment or question in this thread will be entered to win a free copy of this guide!

How to Prepare for MMI Interviews

Hi, this product looks very helpful. In terms of interview prep, do you go over behavior OUTSIDE of the formal interview? I ask because I see the entire interview day as an audition, not just the actual interview (although it has the greatest weight of course).

That's a great point Sabio. During mock-interview sessions we ask our clients typical questions geared towards their application and the school they will be visiting as if we were the interviewer. In the feedback session that follows we go over not only how the interview itself went but what to expect on interview day, and how to behave (example: be polite to EVERYONE not just your interviewer) and answer any questions the applicant may have about the day, including wardrobe.

The fact that you recognize the entire day is important puts you ahead of many students who foolishly behave rudely to admissions staff or interviewer's secretaries. Not only do such interactions hurt ones chances, they are entirely uncalled for as these people are hardworking professionals and deserve to be treated respectfully.

Do you see your program as a tool to kind of level the playing field of the iniquities you pointed out in the introduction? And do your services help prepare for AAMC preparation (listing of EC's, personal statement) in addition to the interview day?

Hi ahstern! We see our program as a way for all applicants to feel fully prepared and confident for their interview day. We do not shy away from applicants with challenges, including those listed in this thread. Those applicants may simply need more help in learning how to interact appropriately. It is extremely beneficial for people who have trouble interacting one-on-one with others to practice and get comfortable with such interactions BEFORE medical school where such interactions occur daily and are extremely important to patients.

We offer AMCAS preparation services as a separate item from interview prep. To learn about our comprehensive application services click here. A student who wants a package including application material prep and interview prep should contact us to set something up.

Hi! How does your interview guide differ from others on the market?

Hi! How does your interview guide differ from others on the market?

For one thing, it's not a product you can buy and is therefore not "on the market" :) . It's exclusive content that we give to all clients who purchase a mock-interview session with us. This contest is actually the only way to obtain a copy of the guide without having a mock-interview with us.

The guide has a list of questions that we have culled from years of working with admissions committees and students going through interviews. It helps the applicant prepare thoroughly for all scenarios that may be asked in a traditional MD interview.

How does your company prepare students for MMI interviews? Do you think more US med schools will use the MMI format? Thank you

Great questions!

To prepare for the MMI interview we do mock-MMI interviews where clients are given a prompt or scenario and expected to react to it. We use the usual timing scheme and go over all of the most common types of scenarios. Feedback is then given on performance. MMI interviews are about keeping your cool and reacting quickly. They are also vastly different from anything most applicants have experienced before so it is even more important to prepare for them than conversational interviews. After an MMI session with us applicants feel prepared and know what to expect from their MMI interview day.

I suspect that more schools will start using MMI as more data about its effectiveness comes out. Medical schools like to feel like they are at the cutting edge in everything, including admissions.

Stay tuned for our upcoming "MMI Interview Guide" which is currently in preparation and will be available for purchase from our website.

I see that your mock interview only lasts about 30-40 mins. Will that be enough time to prepare for both traditional and MMI interview?

Since these interview formats are very different in one session we prepare for one or the other. In addition if you know what schools you will be interviewing with we try to tailor your interview based on data we have about those programs. If you would like to prepare for both types of interview I would suggest getting several sessions.

30-40 minutes is the average length of questioning time but it can go over if it takes longer. This is actually longer than most traditional medical school interviews will last, but we want you to be prepared to answer all types of questions. For MMI we go through all the traditional styles of prompts using the same timing format that you will see on interview day. Following that time we give feedback on your performance, tips for improvement and discuss questions you may have about the actual day itself. You will receive a written summary of the feedback and tips for improvement.
