It seems the would earn more with the FAP if they did the 3 years of residency + 4 year service requirement. Also there is no mal practice insurance in the military, and civilian physicians pay way more taxes such as federal, medicare, unemployment, etc. So is army medicine a better deal for those speciaizing in primary care?

As everyone on here will tell you, dont go into military medicine for the money. Even if a primary care doc ends up in the green financially, all the downsides that go with it arent worth it.

To satisfy your curiosity you can find details of FAP program and a military pay scale online and crunch the numbers for your own situation.

What are the downsides?

Iraq
Afghanistan
Idiots telling you what to do
Bureacracy
Push ups
Worthless training occupying spare time
Worshipping metrics above quality patient care
Ft. Polk (et al)
Poor acuity and volumes

I could go on and on.

I have been thinking about a few things. Are the FAP monthly payments, and 45,000 grant taxed after you recieve them? Or are the taxes already taken out?
