I can't advise you to go into family medicine, as I don't know anything about you. Family medicine certainly isn't for everyone, although I think it's one of the most rewarding specialties for a variety of reasons.

1) Breadth of experience. Every day is like a box of chocolates - you never know what you're going to get. As the doctor of first contact, you make life-saving diagnoses and treat very, very sick patients every day in family medicine. Contrary to the opinion of some here, it's not all snotty noses and physicals.

2) Limitless flexibility in practice options. You don't need a hospital nearby. You don't need any expensive gizmos or gadgets. You don't need to work for anyone else. You can work where you want, when you want, as much or as little as you want. You can practice the full scope of family medicine, or only as much of it as you're comfortable doing.

3) Continuity of care can make a difference. The best way to reduce the incidence of preventable disease is by helping people lead healthier lives, not by slapping a band-aid on their problems after the horse is out of the barn.* Few specialties give you a better shot at doing this than family medicine.

* Gah! Please excuse the mixed metaphor. It's early, and I haven't had my coffee yet.
