When was neurology competitive?

At the moment neurology is one of the least competitive fields (surprisingly, since it is certainly one of the most interesting fields in medicine). Was there a time in the last 40 years where neurology was competive or have neurology residencies generally always been easy to get?

It is a misconception that Neurology residencies are easy to get. Overall you'll more than likely match somewhere, but the top programs (as in all fields) are in fact VERY competitive.
