I have heard different things. A path PD (not my field of choice) told me he thought you were better off interviewing earlier, when everybody is more enthusiastic about the process and not tired of everything.
Residents have generally said people tend to schedule ones they are interested in more later because they feel they will interview better later due to experience.
I question if it matters at all. I think a lot of people use point based symptoms for different factors. Just get your points whenever and it doesn't matter I guess.
