What would you do with only a medical license?

I am an MD/MBA and I have absolutely *NO DESIRE* TO FINISH RESIDENCY. I intend to go into investment banking. However, I am going to do my intern year (in surgery).

Before anyone asks why i would do intern year, or tells me it won't help much in banking- you'd be preaching to the choir.

Its partly because I just want to be a doctor for 1 year, partly because *every* md in the business world has emphatically told me to at least do intern year, it's partly because- with a license, i'll never go hungry and as one person said I'll always have a '**** you option' out of any job.

So I'm just curious- what does anyone think would be the best thing one could do after taking step 3, and then bailing?

Moonlighting comes to mind, as does prescribing Viagra etc. over the internet.

I'm ignoring the plethora of legal risks these entail,:scared: i'm just curious for ideas at this point. I don't even intend to *do* any of these, just brainstorming.

Whatcha whatcha think? Cheers. -o

It's good to lock in what you have by getting licensed but remember that many states now require 2 years to get licensed. Better to lock in now, I agree (at least in *some* state). There isn't much you can do even as far as moonlighting goes with just intern year, but it's a good safety net to lock in steps 1,2,3. I don't know what you can do with just intern year. Maybe advertise in the back of Fitness magazines and on infomercials?

Just so you know, I'm just finishing up my intern year and have my MD/MBA as well, going into the biz world.

(and thanks Crone)

What are you going to do after this year? I want to go into banking, alas, no experience.

Dude, I wonder how much I could get to be on commercials/infomercials.

*handsome grin*

I'm also very curious about this.

I'm going for an MBA after med school, I just don't know if it should be after 1 yr of internship to get that license, or as soon as I get out of medical school.

Where would the 2 yrs of work experience come from if I am planning on applying directly after med school?

once you have your license, you are legally allowed to see patients on your own. however, by not finishing a residency, you are not eligible to sit for the boards of any specialty/subspecialty... and thus you can never be board certified. depending on how you look at it, that could be a big deal or not.

as far as the realm of medicine is concerned, by virtue of having a license, you can see patients. you won't be able to contract with insurance companies (by virtue of not being board eligible/certified)... but you can work under a physician, you can do urgent care, etc. etc.

i graduated with a few people (in 05) who chose not to go into medicine, but rather to follow their heart and do something else (consulting, back into self run business).

Not sure why anyone wouldn't want to do the extra years of residency instead of just an internship. Seems to me that you'd be closing a lot of open doors that you might want in the future.
