I am very interested in rural healthcare and am going to be applying for the NHSC scholarship when it opens. However, there is not much information on what makes someone a competitive applicant.

I wanted to know if a history of service through domestic mission trips and mobile clinics would be of any particular benefit for this scholarship, or if it is mainly merit- or need-based.

Thank you!

As a former NHSC scholar, I don't think that anyone really knows what makes a competitive applicant. Yes, having a history of service with underserved communities will help, as does having a personal history of coming from a rural/underserved area. It is NOT need based, and it is not merit based, but much of the application rests on the essays that you have to write for it.
