I hear terms like salt of a base and salt of an acid, but I don't really understand what is meant by salt in these terms. Can anyone explain this?

Salts are composed of ionically bonded metals and non-metals. Examples would be NaCl, CaCl, NaOH, etc. Some are basic while others may be acidic, depending on their charge and presence of H+ donating/accepting species.
