Hey Folks,

Long time lurker here looking for perspective.

I left the wine production business (of 10 years) to pursue medicine after the loss of my father.

After shadowing my PCP for ~80 hours, I chose to go back to dig myself out of the hole I had managed during my bachelor's (2.3c/sgpa). In the last 3.5 years, I've added 51 DIY post-bacc credits and 36 credits from an SMP all at 4.0 (whew).

I worked full-time as a public health specialist (4,000+ hours) for my local health department throughout my post-bacc before moving across the country to tackle the SMP. In the last few years, I've gained clinical volunteer hours (300), research hours (500 and counting) and managed other passions like wine making, SCUBA, community outreach (400+ hours), music, and amateur astronomy in varying degrees.

My final undergrad GPA reads 2.85 for both cumm/sci.
SMP- 4.0
MCAT - 519

I feel ready, but am I? Do I need to tackle another year of classes to get over the 3.0 hump? I'm 35, URM, with no real red flags outside of a lousy GPA. I've read Goro's school list 100 times, but any suggestions there?

Thanks all.

No advice, but the amount of perseverance you've shown is an accomplishment on it's own. Congrats!

There are a couple of schools out there that will disregard your prior coursework and only look at recent coursework (like last 30 hours). LSU and Drexel come to mind.

Your SMP and MCAT should open doors for you. Your story of perseverance and inspiration will get you in somewhere.

Best of luck!

Definitely think about applying to Tulane! They love non traditional applicants/ career path changers! Your MCAT is super competitive and they take initiative to recognize upward trends in GPA! Wouldn't hurt to make contact with Ms. Horne (an angel) or Dr. Woodson!
