Hi all, I'm currently waitlisted at Western and I'd just like to do this early to make it easier to decide in case they take me off.

About me: CA resident interested in maybe pursuing a competitive specialty as well as matching back to CA.

Western
Touro Nevada
PROS
  • Closer to family/friends
  • More local job opportunities for SO
  • More research opportunities in the surrounding area
  • Better matching to CA
  • Better weather
  • More competitive specialty matches
  • P/F pre-clinical
  • NBME shelf exams
  • Less weight on evals for clinical grading
  • Less emphasis on OMM
  • Less unnecessary activities
  • Cheaper COL
  • Local rotations + less competition for sites
CONS
  • H/HP/P/F pre-clinical
  • COMAT shelf exams
  • Way more weight on evals for clinical grading
  • More emphasis on OMM
  • More unnecessary activities
  • Higher COL
  • Rotations are spread out + more competition for sites from nearby schools
  • Slightly farther from family/friends
  • Not a lot of job opportunities for SO outside of remote work
  • Less research opportunities
  • Slightly worse matching to CA
  • Not a big fan of 100+ weather
  • Less competitive specialty matches

You may want to double check Western's location. It is not near the coast, so it does get 100+ degrees weather at times during the summer. And I am not sure there would be many local opportunities compared to Vegas. Your SO would have to commute and that could get bad in CA.

Noted! Looking further, Western seems generally cooler year-round which is definitely more preferable. My SO and I are very familiar with CA traffic so commuting to LA isn’t too bad either.
I would do Touro for the P/F, convinient clinic rotations and less emphasis on OMM. Your time is valuable in school, especially when you have an SO.
