Visas for foreign medical graduates who wish to do residency in the usa.

Im in my third medical school year(of 6) and im doing the Step 1 USMLE soon. I heard that there are two types of visas the j1 and h1b. If someone prefers the h1b visa , what should they do in order to ensure they get it before doing residency?
