VCOM - (Edward via College of Osteopathic Medicine - Virginia)

Pros
  • Residency- 94% First Match / 99% Final Match
  • Less expensive ($45,000 tuition)
  • Great facilities, anatomy lab, and SIM lab
  • A supportive community like feel (so far!)
  • Close-ish to home (4 hours away)

Cons
  • Rural focus (I'm not sure how impactful the focus is)
  • Less connections to larger hospitals/opportunities
  • Blacksburg does not have much to do
  • Graded on scale (A,B,C with 70% minimum)
  • Mandatory attendance and mandatory business casual dress code

NYIT (New York Institute of Technology- Long Island Campus)

Pros
  • Residency- 99% Placement Rate
  • Global Medicine Certificate program (worldwide focus)
  • Pass/fail grading system ( I heard this is better)
  • Affiliations with larger hospitals + networks
  • close-ish to NYC (1 hr away)

Cons
  • More expensive tuition ($58,00 tuition) and boarding
  • Rundown campus
  • Commuter school
  • The interview did not seem professional (the faculty and staff didn't seem serious enough. It did not give me a good impression)
  • Far from home (6+ hours)

Summary: VCOM is better known and is overall a well reputable school, has a rural focus and is closer to home. NYIT has awesome connections in NY, a worldwide focus, but is farther away from home. I'm really split between the two. I'm not sure how exactly the focus of a school impacts the curriculum, preparation as a physician, and options for residency. I'm definitely a city person and I do want to focus on global medicine, NYIT is just so far from home and more expensive I'm just wondering if it will be worth it (tuition, boarding, travel etc). Any opinions, advice, and input will be appreciated, thanks in advance!
