hi everyone..this is somewhat similar to a previous post, but it hasn't had some activity in a while so i thought i'd ask. i'm a medical student in the us and am considering moving back to india for my career. i just wanted to ask your opinions about residency in india vs us as well as how feasible it is for someone to move back to india after practicing in the states for a few years? does anyone know what that process involves? in terms of licensing and all?

thanks!

Never heard of anyone relocating to India after completing their MD in US (Equivalent to MBBS here).
Let me assure you will never hear an end to people asking you, "why are you here afterall?"
i don't know what are your reasons but relocating to India is going to be hell.

1) medical council of India doesn't recognise MD in US as a valid qualification to start practice or to apply for residency. You will have to clear a licencing exam called FMGE applicable to all foreign medical graduates whose degrees are not recognised by MCI, which basically includes medical degrees from worldover except Nepal.
IIRC, national board of examinations conducts FMGE only once a year around feb/march. Majority of exam takers are indian nationals who did their medical studies in erstwhile soviet bloc countries (comparable to US nationals going to caribbean schools) or people from SAARC countries. I'm not aware of exam format but I think it involves only multiple choice questions with single best response. There is no evaluation of clinical skills AFAIK. That sounds easy enough but many people stumble at first attempt. You can get more information at rxpg.com if you are very keen, it is an Indian equivalent of SDN.

2) once you get licencing and MCI registration you can practice or get into residency (popularly called post-graduation or PG seat here). And here lies the main problem. It is certainly much more harder to get a PG in India than getting double 99 in USMLE steps.

If you are interested I will go into details here because it will take much longer reply than this.

thanks for the info! so does one have to do another residency in india if i pass that exam and do a residency in the us? i'd most likely finish residency here and then go to india for a few years. i'm also curious about what its like to work in an indian hospital? i'd expect the work culture is much different. also, would it be difficult to get a job? or practice there once you've practiced in the us for a number of years?

thanks again!

There are some grey areas here, I'm not too sure whether you will have to do residency here if you are already a board certified specialist in US. There have been lots of recent revisions in rules with regards to recognition of specialty training abroad. Taking into consideration recent trend involving sizeable chunk of people who had finished their MBBS here and then went on to do speciality training abroad only to return after a few years abroad, MCI revised the rules to recognise specialty training obtained in countries like the UK, US, NZ, Australia and Canada. This new rule meant that you can practice your specialty w/ out having to go thro' residency all over again in India. But AFAIK this applies only when you have a basic medical (undergraduate) degree i.e. MBBS from India or the equivalent from abroad but recognised by MCI. I'm not really the person who should be answering these questions because I'm not a FMG, so whatever information I'm giving out here is purely anecdotal. You should carry out your own research into this matter if you are really serious. You will need someone who can go and personally meet the folks at MCI in New Delhi. I don't think MCI website, emails or phone calls will help you in this regard.

Also, I would like note here that candidates clearing FMGE have to complete one year compulsory rotatory internship in India before finally getting licenced.

Why would you want to move India after having completed your MD AND residency in the US ? Whatever be the reasons, working in indians hospitals is definitely not the same as working in US hospitals.

And also as the previous poster stated, many indian nationals who go to the maldvies/russia/china for their MBBS aren't able to clear the MCI's licensing exam simply because the standard of teaching is worse than many indian medical colleges.

Well stop being a jerk.....how you know about the teaching standards in CHINA. boy u need to update urself, every year 1000's of students from CHINA pass their MCI screening test in first attempt and the one who aren't able to pass it, is by their own fault.

u must be aware of the fact that 99% of students studying abroad are the one who failed to manage their admission in an Indian medical clg. and the rest 1% are very well aware of the standards of pvt. medical clg in India. so one who wasn't able to clear their AIPMT or state board how can u expect them to pass their MCI.

Teaching standards are better than India. far better..but usually they are teaching dumb minds, in my class of 64 students only 18 like to study ....who really are curious about human body, rest come to get their degree to fool their parents but actually fool themselves.

so next tym before jumping to any conclusion investigate thoroughly.
any1 who has a problem with my quote can personally mail me on [email protected]

thnx.

I've searched this forum for a good 10 minutes and

a) Either I am horrible at this or
b) the question has yet to be asked.
I can't seem to post a new thread, so I'll just continue in this one because my question is slightly similar (but not really)

I am a 4th year medical student in India. I'm a US Citizen, completed all of the schooling in South Carolina -- K-12 and started in India in 2007. I don't start final year for another 6 months, but I wanted to ask this question to be absolutely sure before proceeding to what I need to do.

I know that after finishing final year, I'll have to complete my Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship (aka House Surgeoncy) for one year before I am eligible to take part 3 of the USMLE (I haven't complete the Part 1, 2 or CK 2 yet, but that will be done sometime within the next 2 years) or to even be recognized as an MBBS doctor.

My question is, is it possible to do to this one year House Surgeoncy outside of India? Say, Europe or South America? I'd like to be closer to home for that one year, for personal reasons. It is a requirement to complete it before I am certified by the MCI as a doctor who is eligible to work in India, or anywhere in the world, but must I do it in India, or is it possible to complete this outside of India? Do other continents offer this internship? (NOT a residency)

I also have a few other questions (because my dad studied in India, and came to America and it was apparently a piece of cake for him; but that was over 30 years ago and times and rules and the start of the USMLE have come into play, so I need to figure this out for myself), but I will ask those later, depending on how this one is answered.

Thank you so much :)

Bumping this because I need an answer to my above question -- I've talked to the principal of my college, and he's not sure of which way to go, so I would love feedback from people who've gone through this or people who know anything about this ... it would be greatly appreciated :)

Thank you! :)

Oddly enough, I'm in the exact same situation right now. It is possible, and easier if your principal is willing to work with you on this.

There are lots of universities in the states that will accept foreign students without a Step 1, for a rotation of a few months. The other way is to find services that will provide the rotations for you.

I have approached my principal who needs proof of the hospital recognition by MCI. So, that is currently my plan of action. I'm trying to get a list of approved hospitals or universities.

Where are you studying?

Thank you so much for getting back to me! I'm sorry I'm a little late replying, I kind of gave up on an answer at all. I'm studying in Trivandrum, Kerala, under Kerala University.

My principal is unsure of how to proceed only because he's only been the principal of a college for 5 years (our college just started 5 years ago), so that's why I wanted to ask around to see if anyone else has done something similar. I know if I do proceed to go outside of India, there will be a lag while everything gets processed, but that's not a problem for me since I wanted to spend 6 months doing a externship in the States just to get a feel of the hospitals and the environment (because of the extreme differences of how things work in either country) anyway before I started the 1 year internship wherever.

Let me know how things work out for you! What year are you and where are you studying?
