Hi folks, don't get me wrong, I am interested in going for Urology. But today I saw a full grown young man bend over for a prostate exam. Well, all I can say is putting a finger up there, felt unusually disgusting.

Any thoughts?

no !!
urology is a good speciality
in fact you have to put your finger in asses all the day
but it is a part of the clinical exam of all patients in surgery!
rectum is the only access for a prostate exam.

Rectal exam in a part of a good physical exam. 2 reasons not to do it:
1. Patient has no rectum
2. You have no finger
Seriously, rectal exams are common in every specialty except maybe psych, rads and pathology. I used to be grossed out by them in the first 2 years of med school. And here I am going into urology. Trust me, it's no big deal.

It's something you get used to very quickly as do your long-time patients. It's almost like Pavlov's dog: Pull out the KY and the older guys will stand up, drop drawer, and bend over without you having to say anything.
