University of Sydney 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Monash, interview this week. (I am from Asia so we have some late interviews held here)

There is still some time to accept Sydney.. Its a whole year to wait but it looks like a great school - So it depends what you like.
Sydney Uni is in the city... is currently the top medical school in Australia and has international electives.... I plan to practise eventually in a strictly regulated country so medical school reputation and program is really important.
What country do you plan to practice in?

Hey
This is an odd claim to make unqualified. "Top" at what? By whom? I think you'll find Australians naming Melb as #1. But assuming there is much meaning in the international ratings game (how much to weigh various criteria is inherently subjective), I don't think there's any significant (i.e. of practical importance) difference between the rankings of a number of the 'top' Australian schools.

Ratings for Australian schools from the most popular int'l ratings groups:

US News (med):

USyd (36)
Melb (47)
Monash (89)

The big Uni debate! (Btw I graduated from melbourne 2010)

The "top" Unis in Australia also known as the group of 8- https://go8.edu.au/page/about . I was quoting some of the pages I've been reading about Sydney med school, lol, they used the word "top". If you graduate from them, most hospitals in Australia, Australians will already find it impressive. However, many newer Unis are producing great quality graduates these days..They are all comparable and no doubt you will get a good quality of education in either of them.

Generally speaking the ranking has been a game between ANU and Melb. Melb has over taken as best Australian uni (overall) for the last 5 years or so..

In terms of medical school, most rankings I have found show (I'm using my phone, sorry not going to paste a bunch of links) that recently Sydney to be higher ranked than Melb. I checked QS and US News. For the one that says pre clinics health, don't forget that Melbourne model follows "US" style pre clinical subjects such as basic science degree compared Sydney(and most other AU unis do not). But as I said, they are all very comparable!

Do Usyd students have to do 4 to 8 weeks of observership (like shadowing) in the summer after M1 year?

does anybody know whether there is a facebook page of class 2019? i kind of heard of it in the webinar a few months ago but i cant find it:confused:

Anyone get anymore details on the deferral offers for 2017 from the 2nd round 2016 applicants?

From what i remember they would send a new offer of admission at the same time as the send offers to other 2017 applicants (so most likely during the end of August 2016).

I have been lurking for a while and was accepted to Sydney Uni for 2016 last summer. I had to decline because of the cost. Private student loans are not practical to pay back during residency. How can this be affordable? I would love to go as I have family in Sydney but I couldn't do it...

FAFSA is how you do it, they have great income-based repayment options.

Sydney is qualified for federal student aid. Living with family in Australia can save a lot of money. For repayment of loans, look into PAYE and IBR.

It is my understanding that they do in general for graduate and undergraduate school according to this list:
https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/sites/default/files/international-schools-in-federal-loan-programs.xlsx

But they are not listed on the same page as an eligible medical school:
https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/prepar...ols/types/international#participating-schools

Edit: Just read a reply from Sydney confirming that the medical school is eligible. How reliable is this year to year? I guess we can't be certain?

I just started at USyd and am using US Federal loans. It was a pretty painless process to get setup. In fact, with the way the US dollar sits compared to the AUS dollar, it seems like it all ends up being cheaper or on par with some US programs if you plan it right. haha It is my understanding that the US government has recently put down rules that international medical schools must track and demonstrate success in training US citizens in order to be eligible. This transition caused a slight blip last year, but has since been fixed. USyd financial aid staff have assured me that they do not foresee losing access to federal aid and are committed to doing what it is required to keep that access. Of course, they make sure to add disclaimers on things that they can't 100% guarantee that they will be be eligible for all 4 years of your program, but it is very unlikely to happen.

Just go to Sydney website and look up that info on their finaid page. http://sydney.edu.au/internationaloffice/student/international_loan.shtml

I'm pretty sure that US students are eligible for federal aid over there.

Put Sydney federal school code (G30672) here and search, it is eligible: https://fafsa.ed.gov/FAFSA/app/schoolSearch?locale=en_EN

Thanks to you both! Guess I will apply again in April...

Hi,
I am interested in the Usyd medical program. Could you tell me more about it? How are the staff and how is the workload? I wish to take up medicine but I am scared about the gross anatomy sessions. How is it in Usyd? How long are we supposed to do gross anatomy for the MD programme and how is the session like. I have never even cut a chicken before. So I am kind of paranoid about it. Thanks in advance
