Does the official acceptance letter come in the mail before or after the deposit payment? Also, does anybody know if you have a bachelors degree, can any of the pre-req courses be wavered?

Gratz to those who got in! And best of luck to those who are still waiting!

Hi, I received an email yesterday from Patrice from the admissions office saying they received my deposit and i will be receiving my official letters in the mail coming soon. also, no you cannot waiver your pre-reqs even if you have a bachelors. they specifically stated in the acceptance email that all pre-reqs must be completed with C- or better

By the way, I'm stuck between Purdue and UMB (Univ of Maryland-Baltimore) right now. Anyone have some thoughts?

I'm out of state for both of them. I heard it was ridiculously hard to get in-state tuition for Purdue (not sure if it's true or not). In UMB, I might be able to get in-state just because I have some relatives there. That might help right?

FINALLY GOT MY ACCEPTANCE LETTER!!!! you best believe I'm attending. I will be at the Baltimore campus, and i was wondering if any current students could help me out:

I'm out of state and I'm looking to live off campus (preferably within walking distance to school). I have two small dogs I'm bringing with me so a pet friendly, safe area is what I'm looking at. I've heard Canton, mt Vernon, and fed hill r good places to start looking at. I want a 1 br but I'm willing to room with up to 2 other girls. Can anyone recommend any apt places that fit that criteria?? its really important for it to be safe because I will be walking my dogs at night. Thank you!!

My bf is a realtor in Maryland, btw I wouldn't live in mt.vernon...I mean it has both good and bad areas, but I would either live in Fedhill or canton. His name is Stephen...here is his email: [email protected]

Anyone looking to rent, feel free to email him :):)

I don't think that having relatives will affect your residency status unless they are parents, spouse, or children, or unless you receive financial assistance from your relatives in Maryland. The only conditions that I know of are that you live in and own property in Maryland for one year, pay taxes, and change voter registration and driver's license.

What about if you start working part time for 1 year? Does that help at all?

Maybe this will help? This site has a section called "Form to Change Residency Status": http://nursing.umaryland.edu/student-resources/student-services/student-forms
It looks like the same thing applicants would submit. Having gone to a few Maryland schools, I've filled out several slightly different versions of this form myself. :p This is just speculation, but in addition to the drivers license/registration, I would guess from this that they're also looking at where you filed your last three state tax returns.

So I interviewed late January, one of the first dates in spring interview cycle.
But I still did not hear anything from Maryland.
I see a lot of posts saying that people got accepted already.
Is this mean that I did not get in?
I've already got accepted to other schools but I've been pushing to do their
requirement stuff because I've been waiting for Maryland. :(

If it's any consolation, you're not alone. I haven't heard any news (good or bad) from Maryland either.

Same here, I interviewed one of the first dates as well. I think we need to give it at least two more weeks because it seems like they're mailing out one batch per week. I think as long as we don't get a rejection letter we still have hope :)

Same here, I have another interview pending, but I haven't booked a hotel because I'm still waiting for Maryland :p

I interviewed there on Feb 29th. I know that some of the people who interviewed about 3 weeks before me have heard from the school. If you haven't then that might be a good sign as they sometimes send stuff via snail mail. It is also possible that some are still being considered.

I'm in the same boat also...interviewed 02/17 and heard nothing yet :( I guess we just have to wait and see what happens. The waitlist should be coming out soon

OMGOMGOMG I just got my acceptance letter!!!!!!!!!WOWOWOWOWOWOW
Right after I finished my prereqs & paid for U Florida.
I just got to decide!!!!

Hello everyone,
I am in need of some serious advice. I've had my acceptance for about a week now but have yet to decide whether I want to go to Shady Grove or Baltimore! I have to figure this out quickly because spots are probably filling up by the day!

Here is my situation:
I live like 15 min from Shady Grove and an hour from Baltimore. If I were to go to Shady Grove, I would be living at home with my parents. If I were to go to Baltimore, I would be living on or off campus with like $700/rent. That being said, I don't mind paying that much money if I could truly gain that much more from Baltimore than Shady Grove.

I'm mainly concerned with academic logistics and extracurricular activities/leadership.
I know that most of the offices of professors are located in Baltimore. How often do students/ are students able to go talk to professors in their office? Is this something I should consider? How do we ask Baltimore professors questions if we are from Shady Grove?

Regarding extracurriculars, I know most of the organizations are in Baltimore because there are more students there. Are my chances for leadership and club involvement really limited if I go to Shady Grove? I know that people have said that there was a SGA president from the Shady Grove campus, but is it much harder to get a leadership position in a frat or club if you went to Shady Grove vs. Baltimore?

Lastly, this isn't as important, but how much social life is at each campus?

Thank you guys so much for your help. I would appreciate any advice you could offer me, as I am trying to make the best decision for the next four years of my life. :)

congrats! When did you receive the email?

I just got it today afternoon:p

Are there any links that I can direct me to tuition stuff?
I've been really wondering how there tuition will work for out of state students..
Would I be out of state for rest of four years or just one?
And any numbers that I can follow?

Here's the link to tuition info for both in state and out of state: http://www.fincsvc.umaryland.edu/sa/images/phar.pdf

In terms of gaining residency, I can't say how easy it is but based on posts I've seen on SDN it is not impossible.

I am in the same situation as you do. Did you make the final decision? Btw, I am a Purdue student now. Anyone have ideas why the ranking of UMB has dropped from 9 to 17 this year?

^ I've decided to go to Purdue! :D Honestly, I really just feel that's the right decision. I don't even know what criteria I based my decision on (might not be the best idea). I am looking forward to going to Purdue.

Anyway, I don't really know why UMB went down that much. Either way, I don't even know if I should trust those rankings.

If I were you, I wouldn't base my decision on ranking. I also got into UNC and I chose UMB because the pharmacist I worked with is an alumnus. For me, I felt as if the UMB has a strong alumni network and it is close to a lot of government agencies. In my opinion, I would go with the school that you feel you will be the most comfortable with and on the respective resources of each school.

How often do students/ are students able to go talk to professors in their office?

Not nearly as much as we should/fairly often as most times if they are in their office you can walk right in and they drop what they doing to help you.

How do we ask Baltimore professors questions if we are from Shady Grove?

E-Mail your Class liaison and he/she will send all questions one message. The professor usually replies within 48 hours.

Are my chances for leadership and club involvement really limited if I go to Shady Grove? I know that people have said that there was a SGA president from the Shady Grove campus, but is it much harder to get a leadership position in a frat or club if you went to Shady Grove vs. Baltimore?

Like most things in life, it depends. All of the student organizations Live-Stream their meetings in some way for the people at the Shady Grove Campus. We also have a specific Shady Grove Vice-President for each class.
Of the fraternities KY, PDC, AZO do a very good job reaching out to Shady Grove for recruitment and events and LKS is based in Shady Grove.

That being said leadership comes in the form of elected positions and some people have a problem voting for someone they haven't seen very often in real-life. But if you are willing to drive to BMore to hangout/goto class a lot you shouldn't have any issues

Lastly, this isn't as important, but how much social life is at each campus?

Fairly non-existent for the SG first-year class at least. The majority of SGers have other obligations such as kids, jobs etc. that take priority over socializing with colleagues.

Baltimore students go out all the time. There is full range from your average after test trip to @ Pickles Pub/Fed Hill, to Random restaurants that people want to go to or an Oriole's/Raven's game.

Hope This Helps and Congrats!

I'm a Baltimore student, so I wouldn't know too much about Shady Grove. But here are some posts from last year's thread that may help you decide between the two campuses.

Yes sometimes they do accept people right up to the start of class, it has happened before but don't depend too much on that. What I think happened with Baltimore last year was that some people sent in their deposit and backed out when they got accepted to their 1st choice and didn't notify the school. It is truly unprofessional and it puts the adcom in a weird position of having to contact people on the waitlist who have committed themselves elsewhere. People who choose SG know they want to go there and so that's why the campus roster didn't fluctuate (I only know of one person who switched to the Baltimore campus before school started when the spot was open). I don't want to give anyone false hope since the circumstances each year are different, for example, for the current 3rd years...the waiting list moved like crazy because the pre-req BioChem was added and a lot of people were unable to fulfill it and so it were not eligible for matriculation.

I live in Silver Spring and I am very used to commuting to Baltimore to hang out with friends and other organizational events (it's 35 miles, ~35-40 minutes). SG is only 8 miles away for me. I know of a lot of people who live in the Rockville area but commute to Baltimore since that is their main campus. I also know several people who live in Baltimore and commute to SG area. I would recommend living close to your respective campus since exam schedule can get ugly during your 2nd semester 1st year and 2nd year (there is an exam every 10 days in Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, and Therapeutics [one class], there is 9 series of this class).

You have to be on campus for Lab, Exams, group activities/case discussions. Labs are once a week. All exams are at 8:30 am in the morning. There's a lot of group activities 1st year. There are 1 to 2 cases per PPT course (x 9). I know of 1st years who lived in Rockville but commute to Baltimore that get together and carpool for exams and labs...I don't know how much longer they will be able to put up with this.

To be a MD resident, you have to forfeit your Cali residency (since you have to show that you pay taxes in MD and change all your car registrations and such).

You will be fine if you go to either campus. Though, I find it easier to stand out at SG and much easier to get to know all your SG classmates. Well SG is going to be an amazing campus since they are planning on building another new building down here to add the Dental and Med program. If you guys don't know already, there are currently 9 universities at Shady Grove with over 30+ programs. There are 3 buildings down here, the newest one was built in 2007 and the garage (free!) was built in 2009.

Here's another benefit to going to SG....you get the rotations you want...I am a second year and we just got our 2 3weeks rotations for the summer and pretty much everyone in SG is happy with what they got. I can't say the same for Baltimore. Some people in Bmore didn't even get a site or they were forced to do the rotation in the winter time over Christmas break (12/19 - 1/6). There's 120 students in Baltimore competing for the same sites while there's only 40 students in Shady Grove competing for as much sites as there are in Baltimore (roughly 60% of the sites are in Baltimore area, 40% in SG area). Plus, everyone in Shady Grove have a car so we can do rotation sites in Baltimore if we want to (it's much more expensive to own a car in Baltimore).

In SG, I have the opportunity to get to know all my classmates and we tend to get together after exams/labs/group activities and dine at the school amazing cafeteria (Bon Appetite) or drive to places like iHop. The Universities of Shady Grove have their own SGA and Student Event Board that put on a lot of events where you can meet others from the different schools (we just had an Etiquette dinner that was served and prepared by the cooking school and next up we have Casino Night). Check out the school's website http://www.shadygrove.umd.edu/

Just remember, whether you choose to go to Baltimore or SG, we are one school! It just depends on what type of living environment you want, a city (Bmore) or more suburban (SG) feeling. The good thing about SG is that it is close to DC, so if you want a city life, it's only a metro ride away!
I love both campuses and I honestly will you say that you will be fine no matter which campus you are at. Remember, you are not limited to anything in Baltimore if you do choose to attend SG.

LOL. Yea, I actually like UMB better but it's just really hard to tell my advisor I am leaving, the other thing I am a little bit concerned is that the safety issue though.

Thank you so much Mutiny and FarmerRx! I appreciate the perspectives you guys gave me :)

I don't think there is anything for you to worry about, you seem to have more than enough credits that would qualify as Humanities or Social Science.

With regard to the on campus housing, does anyone know if two people are allowed to share a studio (Greene)? Thanks!

I would send out your transcripts and courses assessment form early as a definitive way of knowing whether or not you have met all the pre-reqs. But yah, by the looks of it, you got everything.

Btw, Do geology courses or astrology courses count as Humanities/Social Science for UMB? also can you use 1 course in more than 1 course requirement catagory?

Some of my two cents regarding campus selection (I am c/o 2012 shady grove student)

Both campuses are what YOU make of it. If you want to party/socialize with your classmates, you can do that on both campuses. Joining a fraternity might be the best option if you are into that, IMO (I am not in a fraternity) My friends and I hung out after and between classes - we had more time because we were SG students and watched lectures later. However, that might be different with the new curriculum.

If you want to be able to talk with professors, you are always allowed to go to Baltimore whenever. Most professors teach class and have other practices sites etc, and are usually not in their offices. The best way to contact them is through email, and they usually prefer you make appointments to see them.

On the flip side, we have a few professors based at SG and are hiring a few more. I have never felt the need for one on one with any professors from Baltimore. I prefer having a few professors here that I actually get to know and they get to know us.

All opportunities are open to all students, regardless of campus. They try to make them as equal as possible.

PM me if you have any other questions.

Congrats to those that got accepted. I am a P4 at UMB Baltimore campus. I will be moving back to California with some of my roomates. We have a bunch of furniture we would like to sell if anyone is interested. I will compile a list soon. Thanks! Shoot me a PM if interested.

Has anyone received acceptance e-mail this week?
