“The Louisiana Board of Regents today approved the application for licensure submitted by New York Institute of Technology to operate a College of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of Louisiana Monroe. NYIT is a private, not-for-profit institution of higher education with domestic campuses in New York (Manhattan and Old Westbury, Long Island) and Arkansas. NYIT and ULM have a nonbinding Memorandum of Understanding through which the two entities are exploring establishing a Monroe site of New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) on the ULM campus. More information will be released soon.”

This means that NYIT is trying to become the McDonald's franchise of DO schools. This does nothing to bolster the status of the DO profession. All it does is serve as a cash cow to the parent organization. Here's the best parallel... Look at the proliferation of Law Schools and what it did to their graduate's career outcomes. With stagnant demand, and an increasing number of graduates, salaries and job placement became diminished. Since there is a cap upon the number of residencies in the U.S., you have stagnant demand, with an increasing number of MD and DO graduates. This is my biggest beef against the COCA and their strategic planning process (or lack thereof).
