2 weeks left of school before winter break and about a month left till the new year. I want to ask my professor for an LOR, do you think it is too late to ask for one?

I would need the LOR by the beginning of January and who knows if my professor would write me an LOR since it's over the break. Should I still even try?

This LOR is for scholarships by the way.

Go in person and be upfront that you know its last minute and with the holidays coming up you understand he/she may not be able to write one for you.

Thank you, I'll keep that in mind!

Anyone else?

I think asking in person is the best since you are still in school. The holidays though might be a big issue...
Another important factor is: how well do they know you?

If you have already proven yourself to be a great student, maybe it won't take them that wrong to write you a recommendation.
