Hi guys. I am currently a 3rd year in Mount Royal University doing my health science and will graduate a semester late. I don't have that great of a GPA but I really am trying to become an optometrist. I volunteer with my university and other stuff going on to improve my extracurricular and hopefully get to shadow an optometrist soon. I'm planning on doing my OATs this summer.

I wanted to know what schools consider before they take you in?

If you guys could give me some study tips to improve my GPA will be appreciated too!

Check out ASCO's website. It seems it got a website layout change recently which seems to have broken links though.

Study tips = stay determined & seek out academic resources provided by your school (tutoring, workshops, office hours)

I didnt have the greatest GPA, but I showed that throughout my undergrad I improved each semester and make sure you get atleast a 300 on each section of your OAT's. Make sure you shadow/intern atleast 2 different optometrists and get a LOR from both! I feel like the schools want a well-rounded person so if you show that you will be fine :) Just stay positive!

Thanks for the responses, guys. Do they take into account the number of classes you retake throughout your undergrad? I have some courses I do poorly in (Chemistry, mainly) which has put me behind by a semester or so.

They might but I had to retake a few classes as well and I just explained why I had to (i.e. I was busy with my dance team and other organizations) but end that with how this gave you a chance to improve and prioritize!!
