thank-you notes to LoR writers: timing

I know I must write thank-you notes to my LoR writers. My question is, when? Is it right about now, when the LoRs are finally appearing in ERAS, or is it at some point in the future (I've read that it is advisable in the note to update the writers on your career progress)?
