trying to do some career planning.

how many films on average does a radiologist sort out per day (8 hour day)?

is it true that going rate per film is $75?

any rads residents who know what the starting salary and average salary after 3 years is?

is outsourcing a threat?

Are you trying to calculate a salary?... I wouldnt bother. If you havent started residency yet, by the time you get through 5yrs of rads + any fellowship, salaries and reimbursement will be totally different than they are now.

As far as your questions:

# of films depends on the practice (private vs. academic) and the volume of studies coming through the practice.

I dont think there is a "going rate" for films. The reimbursement varies by the type of study, the location of the practice and negotiations between insurance/hospitals/radiologists.

Starting salary depends on the job, specialty, volume, and the location. It can be as low as the mid 100s for academic jobs and as high as 4-500s for very specialized fields in some of the less desirable locations/practices with higher volumes.

The whole issue of outsourcing is real, but it is doubtful that it is a threat to the specialty. There are too many films to read so there will always be jobs here in the US. The only impact it may have is on work hours and reimbursement but that may not even be an issue.

While your questions are interesting, these arent the issues you should be thinking about when picking a specialty. No matter how much you make, if you dont like what you are doing you will be miserable. Also, as above, the future of radiology is very unlikely to look like the past...
