Is there a technique to make the first throw in a surgeon's knot when the needle is in the left hand without moving the left hand? In other words, when the needle is in the left hand, is it possible to avoid moving the thread holding the needle for a right handed person to avoid sticking onself?

With a one-handed tie you usually do the first two throws in the same direction - this has the same effect as the surgeons knot in locking the stitch. The one-handed tie is done while moving one hand and using the other hand to keep the other end of the suture taught. This can be done with the needle on the suture.
