I've had a few queries about the timing of Step II in regards to the interview process. Here is what I have for you based on conversations with my chair:
1. You really should plan to take Step II before you apply for interviews. If you don't pass Step II (I would guess that this would almost never happen) you can't start residency and it leaves the program that takes you in a lurch.
2. Because of timing issues, if you don't have Step II by the time you interview, the programs do NOT automatically get a report of your scores. At my program, if we decide to rank you, we contact the appropriate agency to get those scores before the rank list goes in.
3. If you tank on Step II, or if you don't pass, you will not be ranked.
4. If there is no score available, you will not be ranked.
