hi everyone
i was wondering what effect doing ugrad research in a particular field can have on getting into a mstp and specializing in that same area. for example, how much would it help (if at all) to have two full years of experience in cardiac electrophys research, and then apply to mstps that have similar programs, while saying that you want to be in that program because of thier electrophys lab? do admissions commitees factor this in if they trully believe you want to continue in that area, or do they not pay attention becasue you are still young and are likely (by thier judgement) to change interests.
thanks!

some programs divine your level of interest by noting a match between your strong research interest and their strong research program in the same area. that being said, most programs know that the vast majority of people change fields, or subfields prior to choosing their thesis. i felt that programs appreciated applicants with strong interests in specific fields, as long as they were open-minded to some extent.
