Wow, just took the test, and it recommended "allergy/immunology!" Did anyone else take this test and what did you end up with?

I took it and ended up with three closely-grouped top picks: 1) nuc med 2) plastics and 3) gen surg. Since I'm going into gen surg (with the distant hope of doing peds surg), I thought those results were pretty well on target.

My top was radiology & dermatology, with pathology as a close 2nd.

Wasn't considering any of those. The ones I am considering ranked 8 (OB/Gyn), 18 (IM), 21 (EM), and 33 (FP). Funny, my 1st choice came up last on this!

I got Gastroenterology, Radiology, and Emergency Medicine.

I think this has more relevance in the Allopathic Students section, since we med students are the ones who have yet to decide about what specialty to take.

We had a rather lengthy thread on this very topic months ago - too bad Search is still disabled. At any rate, it was pretty accurate when I took it - all Surgical specialties at the top, mostly lifestyle ones.

I've taken the test a few times over the last several months to see if the outcomes are the same. With one exception, pediatrics and ophthalmology are always at the top of my list. I don't know what to think about that, since I have NO idea what I want to do. At least I'm consistent.

Hi SMS, no I'm not really interested in "allergy/immunology!" I was thinking more along the lines of family medicine, which ranked outside the top twenty!

Just goes to show you that when you think you know yourself well...you don't!

I just tried that quiz. I ended up with General Surgery, Optho, and GI as my top 3. The rest of the top 20 surprised me. I am actually considering Peds and OB/GYN; those were #20 and #21

I am sure if I repeated the test later today the outcome would be different!! Oh, well!

Interesting...I had taken this quiz during my second year of med school. Pediatrics was number one on the list. I took it with a grain of salt. I am now at the end of my third year and I thought that taking the quiz produce different results. Well...Peds came up number one again. Surgery and subspecialties are consistently at the bottom of the list. Pediatrics was my favorite rotation during thrid year. Maybe that's a sign...

Well, I'm going into radiology and if I didn't get into radiology, I was seriously considering pathology as well so looks like it was pretty close for me. I did like surgery a lot though, but I just don't have the motivation or desire to work that hard.

I am just about to start my 3rd year, so I will still have ample opportunity to fine tune my choices, but I would say that infectious disease is definitely at the top of my list so far, with hematology running a close second. Although I don't put much stock into these types of quizzes, it was neat to see that these were among the top 3.

I must have answered some questions with my eyes closed. My top 3:

I'm not even considering them. Luckily, colon & rectal surgery was at the bottom of my list-- I can't say it ever crossed my mind to enter that field. I'm leaning towards EM or Trauma Surgery which showed up in the middle of the list...interesting, though.

Why did it double up on me like that? Did that happen to anyone else? Well ob/gyn is what I want to do right now, so I guess it's comforting that it's both my #1 and #2. Aerospace med, that would be cool, but I think there are only like 3 or 4 residencies in the country aren't there?

I have taken it 4 times over a span of many months. Thoracic surgery is always #1 (??) although the rest fluctuate a bit. I don't really want to be a thoracic surgeon, but perhaps I should reconsider.

you guys should be careful when using this quiz. I think it is pretty out dated since it is based on Anita Taylor's book. While the most recent edition was pubished in 1999, her data was originally compiled in 1986.

I had a lot of anguish before I realized this.

Also realize that there are a lot of variations in personalities within larger fields, For example Surgical Oncologists or Transplant surgeons are more inclined toward complex problems and "IM type" issues than your classical general surgeon.
Interventional radiologists are completely different from mammographers and body radiologists. Even within GI, there are hepatologists who may never do procedures.

So just be careful when making checklists, since choosing a career in medicine is never as black and white as perhaps it was in the past.

Usually these quizzes are put together by first giving the test to a bunch of people already practicing in that field, recording their responses, and then seeing how closely your responses match theirs.

Since I strive NOT to be anything like most general surgeons I've met, the test becomes meaningless. Unfortunately, I scored pretty much like a general surgeon anyway .

It's for reliability - if you have the question "Do you like people?", and you put 1 once, then 5, then 3, then 4, then it's not reliable; this is to help make sure it's not totally BS.
