Hi all! I just wanted to start this thread for all applicants for retina fellowship 2013-14! I would like to know how many programs would you be applying to? (I have applied to 8 progs). And which programs would you consider in Top 5 for 'US residents' and 'IMG's'?

Cheers!

I guess I'm in. Applying to 13 programs to play it safe, trying if possible to stay geographically in the South.

Got an interview call from Joslin! Anyone else heard from Joslin or elsewhere?

I was hoping this thread would be active so that we can all get some info as early as possible on who has already sent out offers. It would make scheduling things much easier and take the anxiety of it.

U Washington- email 8-15. Interview 9-14 (with a possible 10-19 date opening if needed)

It's still pretty early.

To update the list classmate of mine told me Tufts sent him an invite this past week. Not sure when the interview date is, did not apply there.

Does anyone know much about RGW? It's a little out of my Texas/Deep South strike zone but no one at my program seems to know much about it except that it's supposed to be busy. Trying to decide if can squeeze RGW and Emory on back to back days

Anyone have BSCS ophthalmology books/pdfs they are looking to sell?

Just for my own edification, what are the "top-tier" retina fellowships?

The ones that people have spoken highly of are:
- Beaumont
- Wills
- Duke
- Iowa
- Bascom Palmer: great for internal fellows, but not as great for external fellows?
- Cleveland Clinic
- Emory
- UCLA
- Harvard/Mass Eye and Ear
- Oregon
- Michigan
- Wayne St/Kresge
- Hopkins
- Columbia
- NYEEI
- Tufts
- Vanderbilt
- Barnes Retina/The Retina Institute of St Louis: still strong after the split from Wash U?

Any thoughts?

To respond to Corn Dog:

My thoughts on top 10 retina fellowships (not in order):
- Beaumont
- Wills
- Duke
- Cleveland Clinic
- Emory
- Oregon/Casey
- Tufts
- Harvard/Mass Eye and Ear
- Bascom Palmer
- Columbia

Honorable mention fellowships
- Vanderbilt
- Barnes Retina/The Retina Institute of St Louis
- Stanford
- Michigan
- Wilmer
- UCLA

After interviewing at nearly all those programs, in my opinion:

Best (& Highest Volume) Surgical Fellowships: Wills, Beaumont, UCLA, Emory

Best Retina Fellowships for an academic career: Duke, U Mich, BPEI (but low surgical numbers in external fellowship), MEEI

Fellowships on the rise: Vanderbilt, Cleveland Clinic

Other notable strong fellowships: Tufts, Iowa, Cornell, Columbia (particularly given excellent medical retina experience at VRM/NY), USC (some turmoil given split with Doheny), OHSU/Casey, Retina Institute of St. Louis/Barnes (not as strong after split with Wash U), UBC (1 yr intensive surgical fellowship in British Columbia)

Wilmer was know as a strong fellowship for many years, but they have lost many stars over the past several years (Drs. Haller & Dunn to Wills, Drs. Nguyen & Do to Nebraska, among others) but still gives decent training & still have the Wilmer/Hopkins name

Thank you for the responses!

Couple of follow-up questions... What do you guys think of the Wash U retina program? Even after the split, they seem to have enough surgical volume to get 1-2 fellows each year.

Lastly, I didn't see UIC/IEEI being mentioned. Is UIC a good program? just not top-tier?

Hi All,
Just for my own education, could you list the key factors most important in procuring top fellowships?

Letters of recommendation and who they are written by are huge, as is the reputation of the residency program you come from. Also the willingness of your mentors to go to bat for you, retina is a small world.

Regarding top fellowships in terms of clinical training I would say Beaumont, Wills, UCLA, BPEI (internal) are tops.

Right up there with that group would be Casey, RGW, Cleveland, Tufts, Duke, and Emory.

Columbia, BPEI (external), Stanford, Barnes, Michigan, UIC, Iowa, and MEEI would be the next tier down. NYEEI is an underrated program as is Wayne state.
