residency question??????

I am a little confused. If someone wants to apply to both allopathic and osteopathic residencies it is my understanding that if that person was matched in an osteopathic residency then they would automatically be removed from the allopathic match. Therefore, if someone really wanted an allopathic residency do they have to completely avoid the osteopathic match. I am interested in ortho and I know there are great osteopathic ortho programs but most of the programs around my hometown are allopathic and very competative, Washington University, so I was just trying to get this question straight.
