I am starting to think about clerkships and would like to hear your views on residencies that only take 1 per year. Would it be more wise to schedule a visit to the program over a weekend and hope for a crip interview rather than clerk there for a whole month?

If you want or think you want a program it is always smarter to extern for a month. Unless you're weird and the month may end up hurting you...

The thing you have to remember about programs who take 1-2 residents per year vs 5-6, is often times they also take less externs per month. It's not always the case but using the 1 resident per month example...let's say that program only takes 1 student per month as well. You are now competing against maybe 7-8 people for that one spot. It's probably not any different odds than a program who takes 4 residents per year but accepts 4-6 externs per month. The ratio of externs to residency positions often times stays the same. Just something to remember/consider.
