MD research outside of desired specialty

I'm an MS1 tentatively interested in anesthesiology (I realize this will likely change a million times by 4th year), but I also think the microbiome is freaking fascinating and want to get involved in a project. How important is it to do research related to the specialty you intend to apply to?

It's only really important for the more competitive specialties - derm, ortho, ENT, plastics program directors all rank "research in the field" as of primary importance. For anesthesia, it's not as important, though it also wouldn't hurt. Go do the project you're more interested in!
