Hi,

I will be re-applying to medical school during the 2022-2023 cycle and was hoping to get some advice for my school list. During the 202-2021 cycle, I applied to about 20 schools in July and was interviewed and waitlisted at one school. However, I had very little clinical experience and shadowing during that cycle. I am applying to both DO and MD schools this cycle.

Here is an overview of my application:

Demographic: NY Resident, White Male, 28 Years Old
Major: Exercise Science, Sociology
Science GPA: 3.65 (Strong upward trend. I was originally going to school for Exercise science before deciding to pursue medicine during my senior year. It took a few more years to complete courses/MCAT)
Non-Science: 3.48
MCAT: 511 (Chem/Phys 127, CARS 126, Bio/biochem 129, Soc/Psych 129)
Desired Specialty: Primary Care

Non-Clinical Experiences:
  • Teacher's Aide for Medically Fragile Special Needs Students 648 Hours Paid
  • Administrative Assistant for Special Needs School 1856 Hours Paid
  • Genetics Tutor 60 Hours Paid
  • Delivery Driver for Florist in College 1445 Hours Paid
  • Genetics Research and Poster Presentation at NCUR 400 Hours Volunteer
  • Self Taught Sign Language 15 Hours Volunteer
  • Employee Fitness Trainer for College Staff 320 Hours Received Academic Credit
  • Saltwater Reef Aquarium 500 Hours Personal Hobby
  • Resistance Training 3700 Hour Personal Hobby

Clinical Experiences:
  • Medical Assistant for Spine and Pain Center 1350 Hours Paid (New Experience)
  • Administrative Assistant for Internal Medicine Practice 45 Hours Paid
  • Data Consultant for New York State Center for School Health 180 Hours Paid
  • Emergency Department Volunteer 80 Hours Volunteer (New Experience)
  • Physician Shadowing (Several specialties) 115 Hours Volunteer (New Experience)

Allopathic School List:
How many allopathic schools should I apply to based on my application? I used MSAR to rule out schools with high stats or strong in-state preferences but the list is still too long.

You're making the typical mistake of looking at schools based upon their stats, and ignoring how many out-of-state applicants they reject.

You have a lot of donations on your list and I will cull it down to something more realistic.

I think that you need more service to others less fortunate than yourself.

ADD to list PCOM, ACOM, all TOUROs, MUCOM, all VCOMs except LA, KCOM, KCU, NYIT.AR, NOVA

Okay, I will add more DO schools and remove some MD schools based on these suggestions. Thank you, Goro and Faha!

I want to thank @Faha and @Goro for helping me with this list. I was accepted to multiple DO schools and one MD school!!!

It’s very generous that you both spend so much time helping so many of us pre-meds. Sending this wonderful update was the least I could do in return.
