wow, im reading all these posts about how stressful medical school is, and now im beginning to freak out. i start MS1 in about a month, and its really scaring me. I took a year off before med school and working in the biotech industry made me realize how cushy these people's lives are. they make a lot of money, are always going out and socializing, and have very low job stress. Working there has been like a fun vacation. Now, i know that the next 7 years in front of me will be filled with stress and anxiety, i feel so envious of those with such an easy life!

don't freak out, it's not as bad as it seems. you'll get used to the studying and you actually have time to do fun stuff if you manage your time well. or if you're a genius and can memorize everything the first time you read it then you're all set

calm down. relax. chill. your homework assignment for the next month is to find some stress management techniques.

Yes. the real world is a lot easier than medical school and being a doctor. Hell my friends where i work get paid professional salaries to get tan and build muscle all day. Talk about low stress.

Hey there,
Do not stress out at this point. Once you get to class, you adjust up or down to fit the situation. Medical school is interesting and requires nothing more than disciplined study. Gone are the days of last minute cramming for an exam. Other than having good study habits that involve day to day study, you have nothing to fear. If you have successfully gotten through your undergrad in one piece, you can excell in medical school. Go enjoy the rest of your summer and get ready for the fall. Also, start getting in good physical condition and put together some good aerobic exercise system that you can do daily while you are in school. It can be a simple as spending 30 minutes shooting hoops with you peeps during breaks for stress relief.

C'mon, there is enough time over the next four years for unnecessary stress and anxiety...Enjoy peace of mind for now.

Let's not lump the entire "real world" into your one glimpse. There are a lot of us career changers who will tell you we are looking forward to the relaxed, regimented, pace of school again. Sure, it's a lot of hours of studying, but studying isn't exactly back-breaking work, the material is voluminous but I'm told it's not conceptually hard - just a lot to remember, and from what I have heard and observed, there is a lot more free time during the first couple of years as compared to some of the more hour intense professions out there. Save your freaking out for third year, I think.

Nah, *highly* specialized tradesmen.

You mean longshoremen??

Or how about home-building contractors?

I have spent my summer away from academic medicine (in private hospitals), and I can assure you that "real world" medicine is much less stressful than the university setting. The hours can be long, but once a practice is established, it takes less effort and stress to keep it rolling. This includes the PCP's and specialists I've spent time with.

Med school and residency are stressful. Spending time away from the university is very encouraging and brightens the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. You'll get to do all of the things that your friends do, and you'll get to do much more important and meaningful things than your friends do. Don't let their cushy lives discourage you.

well let's not gloss over the fact that physicians have among the highest suicide and substance abuse rates of all professions. so yeah it can be bad.

Biotech people have it nice, I'll give you that, but what satisfaction do you derive at the end of the day from what you do? (and that's an individual thing obviously).

Having just finished some theoretically "miserable" rotation blocks, I can tell you that if you can get up (often at 3:30am, and by the ear-busting ring sound of your pager) everyday in this job and say to yourself "I like helping sick people", you've made the right choice. Sounds insanely idealistic but if you can't think like that at least when you're young and early in your training, it'll be a fast downhill slide into misery.
