what is the mrcp? is the royal college of physicians and surgeons related to this? how prestigious is this in england? details please!

MRCP = this is a professional title that simply shows your membership - Membership of the Royal College of Physicians.
There are a number of Royal Colleges (Physicians) the ancient foundations in London and Edinburgh dating back to the 1500s and those located in the Commonwealth - Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and others.
The Royal College of Surgeons is a separate body (as are the other Royal Colleges - ie of General Practitioners, of Radiologists, of Pathologists, etc).
The Colleges are regulatory, advisory and professional bodies concerned with setting and overseeing academic and professional guidelines and qualifications for doctors. Unlike the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, the Royal Colleges in the UK are professional bodies alone; they do not provide education or training towards primary medical qualifications; membership is for those who have already completed their medical degree and who have relevant experience in the specialism they are wishing to pursue.
Membership to the Royal Colleges is by examination.
Prestige is irrelevent.

In otherwords - in order to advance, you must sit (and obviously pass) the mrcp exams. "Membership" isn't like a membership to a club or anything like that. They're pretty much mandatory if you want to progress in your career in the UK/Ireland.

after basic medical training (2-3 years as an SHO) you sit the MRCP (if you want to be a physician) this grants you a certificate of basic medical training and allows you to apply for a national training number/registrar post.
