Hi Everyone:

I am studying for the PTCB exam but I do not have any pharmacy experiences at all. I found it very hard to self-study because there are too many informations on the drug classification part. Here is a few questions regarding drug classification:

1)Do I have to memorize the names and trade names of all the common drugs? It took me 3 days to memorize about 100 antibiotics and their trade names and there are still 9 more classes of drugs to go. Do I really need to do this?
2)Do I have to know the side effects of the common drugs?
3)What do I need to know about the drug classification part on the exam?

Please please please help me! Just to make my life easier. Thank you so much!!

The bad news is YES you do need to memorize all these to do well on the test. The good news is you can pass the test without memorizing most of this stuff. I passed the tast in May only getting a few of the drug question right. However, I did very well on the other sections. Make sure you have mastered the calculations, pharmacy law and procedure before you buckle down on drugs. The former is the most important. I wrote a post about my opinion on this a couple months ago. Check it out. Also take a practice PTCB test if you are still worried about it. If you pass it, chances are that you wil pass the real one too. That's what I did.

Gotcha man, and thank you so much.
Now I have another question regarding the pharmacy laws. On my study manual, these laws are:
-The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906
-The Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938
-The Durham-Humphrey Amendment of 1951
-The Kefauver-Harris Amendment of 1962
-The Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of 1970
-The Poison Prevention Act of 1970
-The Drug Listing Act of 1972
-The Drug Regulation Reform Act of 1978
-The Orphan Drug Act of 1983
-The Drug Price Compeition and Patent-Term Restoration Act of 1984
-The Prescription Drug Marketing Act of 1987
-The Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1990
-The Occupational Safety and Health Administration
-Health Insurance Portability and Accpintability Act of 1996
-Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Are these the pharmacy laws you talking about? Thank you again!

Yes, all these are important, but knowing their application in the pharmacy is just as important. I guess what I;m trying to say is, know what they are AND what they mean. The test may ask you situational type questions based on these Laws.
